hi ! i'm living in cold weather , when i'm starting my car, it idle at 2000 rpm , and only drop to normal when the car is really hot , so i'm asking you guys if you had experiment the same thing as i do ???

I think that's pretty normal for just about any weather. How long does it typically take for it to settle down?

well it depends on how it's cold outside , but during summer , my rpm almost doesn't move when idle !

Yes. A 2k idle from a cold start is completely normal. Why, you ask? It's to ensure the catalytic convertor reaches optimal operating temperature as quickly as possible to ensure to lower emissions.

mine idles at 2k and lower in a cold start up...hten once its realyl warmed up its normal at like 700rpm

yeah same with mine and i live in soutthern cali.

Because his car is a Honda Civic (in Acura guise) and Honda has different ways of meeting the LEV Tier II or ULEV emissions requirement.

i was wondering this when i first got my car in november. so i called the dealer after the first week and asked the shop guys...they told me what you all have figured out. it idles high until the temp is 234 degrees and then chills out...

now i'm curious ... what is the normal temp? My car starts up at 2k and stays at 1.5-2k for a while... i would drive slowly for 2-3 miles before it goes up toward the halfway mark on the temp gauge ... but it's never straight .... it's always a lil lower from the half mark .... except after 30-40 minutes of driving ... is that normal?

i think its normal fo rhte needle to be a lil after the half way mark..cuz thats how mines is..is the place u live very cold? cuz in like 50degree weather...i get up halfway mark pretty fast

Mine is like that too. I live in the inland empire here in southern california and gets pretty hot down here. At cold start, RPM is at 2K just like everyone else. The temperature guage is always just below the halfway point on the meter. Barely below the halfway. Despite the cooler weather we are having recently, it still reads out the same.

We had a cold winter too; under -40* in January and now down to -20*C (-4*F). I've seen about 2200 RPM cold fast idle in extreme cold weather, and usually at 2000 RPM for a bit, at about -10*C and colder... It is higher than any car I've owned before but it does warm up quicker. I still have my grill covered which helps, and I use the block heater, as well as Amsoil synthetic in the engine, tranny and power steering.
I did notice that the engine would 'buck' with a few sudden knocking kick-backs just after a cold start at fast idle when I was using 87 octane mid-grade gas. I have since switched to 91 octane premium fuel which cured it and increased overall performance.
By the way, switching to Bosch's Platinum 4's improved starting considerably (less cranking time), especially when starting warmed-up engine.

Mine was a dealer installed option. Check with your Toyota dealer...

mine revs at 2000rpm cold too. i wonder if it'll cause premature engine damage

don't think it will cause engine damage ... i guess it's all normal ... but it's the first car i had that stay hella loud during fast start ... for the longest time too ..!

platinum plugs i heard aren't good if your car didn't come with platinum ... but if it helped you ... good for it....
