I need a throatier, quieter exhaust...

I bought a magnaflow exhaust for my 03 Corolla S and I hate it. It is loud and raspy. I would like a quieter, throatier exhaust. Anyone have experience with anything other than magnaflow?

Price is an issue and I would like to go maybe cheaper than what the magnaflow cost me. I have put in the K&N air filter and 2.5 exhaust from the header back... if that helps.

I will await your replies. Thanks gang..

    thermal R&D, TRD.

beyond that, no. the Thermal sounds badass...and the TRD is always a nice complement to the corolla.

The cost will be an issue, I believe. I have heard that the Dynomax are decent, any thoughts. I am really unhappy with the 'ricey' magnaflow...

    greddy == TRD

dynomax definitely sounds pretty good on imports but you can't get the ones made for american cars.

i vouch for thermal. very throaty and doesn't roar until you are really trying to move

What do you mean by the "ones made for american cars"?

I am having a difficult time finding a freaking muffler.

I have magnaflow and i agree it is kinda ricey at times but compared to all the civics, focus', etc. it's not that bad. TRD is pretty quiet. Borla i think would even be louder than magnaflow.

did you get oval or cannister? Oval designs by nature are quieter than cannister.....

Are you running a resonator? BTW notice any loss of low end with the 2.5inch piping? (In case you are running FI then nevermind)

I am running a resonator. I had taken it off initially, but it was way TOO ricey then, so I had them put it back on. I did not notice any loss of power anywhere with the 2.5.

    What is FI

Odd that your Magnaflow sounds ricey. On my '03 Corolla CE, I have a Magnaflow SS 5x8x14" oval 2.25" in/out muffler. It has a very mellow, throaty tone to it. No rasp at all.

I think 2 1/2" is too large of an exhaust for that motor, could be where the 'rasp' is coming from. I'm really surprised you didn't lose any bottom end power. I only have 2 1/4" on my 22RE. Most guys with 2 1/2" on there 22RE trucks switch to 2 1/4" and like it much better, and those are 2.4L. How large is the tail pipe? That also may be affecting the sound.

i second you on the pipe size. when i took my car in to get exhaust done, the guy told me he didn't feel right charging me for piping when the car already had a 2 1/4" stainless catback. this was a shop that does nothing but exhausts - they agreed that i was perfectly fine with what i had, and that anything bigger would likely be an overall detriment.

he saved me $250, so i was pretty happy.
