All I know is that the VVT-i is harder to work with when you're turbocharging the engine. That's all.

How To Modify a Soarer Vvti turbo

    Hello,
I'm quite new to the world of mods for cars, but i'm quite keen.
at the moment I'm about to buy a 96 soarer single turbo with vvti engine.
But some guys keep telling me not to buy it, as its no good for modification to get more power and performance out of it. They are suggesting I get an earlier model 92 with twin turbo with no vvti. They say it is quicker than a vvti run engine soarer with single turbo and it's easier to modify.
Is this true, what can be done to a 92 model soarer twin turbo 1JZ-GTE that can't be done to a 96 model single turbo soare 1JZ-GTE vvti?
I'm not planing on a big boost, i'm aiming for at least 250 kW at the wheels which is almost 390 bhp. Is the vvti engine really that bad?
Please help with any suggestions and mods thank you.

bullshit, vvt-i can make so much more power turbocharged when done right. It just takes more work.

i think u should stick with your 1jZ-GTE vvti, and see if u can find some ppl who know how to specifically tune a vvti 1JZ

Thank you all for all your replys and comments, you've given me a lot of food for thought. I guess if i want for power i stick with the normal twins without the vvti due to advanced difficulty with the vvti. But i must venture into this unknown world of vvti, worse case i just go back to the older model without the vvti.
Wish me luck I shall keep you posted on my progress, first must find someone that is able to tune the vvti if not back to the old model.

may b a bit late to reply here...
u do not need to do anything with the vvti system as long as u stick with ur original ecu... the ecu will calculate the timing for u...
except the cams... others just mod like standard jz engine...
    u will be surprised...

in jap... they r putting a 3SGE dual VVT-i into a supras with bolt on turbo... they able to squeeze out 530hp on the wheel from this precious engine... think about it if u have a JZ with VVT-i... ;-)

the 1JZ VVTI motor is single turbo from factory and makes peak torque 2000rpm earlier than the older non VVTI twin-turbo 1JZ. The single turbo VVTI 1J is MUCH easier to mod and work on, I've owned both. If you're worried about tuning the VVTI, get a PowerFC which already has decent VVT maps programmed.

There's tons of bolt on turbo kits available, Blitz or HKS cams, cam controllers, injectors, etc etc available.

If you're after 250kw, this is what I'd do...

    HKS GT2835 bolt-on turbo kit
    3" exhaust from turbo back
    Large frontmount
    SARD injectors
    PowerFC with boost control kit.
    80mm Z32 MAF
    New Clutch.

In my car I have a powerfc, cooler, 3" exhaust with metalcat and a pod filter. The GT2835 and injectors are on my "to do" list as the GT2835 doesn't loose any of the bottom end response the stock turbo has. The stock MAF tops out around 220kw ATW so with the powerfc you have the option of using a couple of different larger Nissan MAF's. The VVTI 1JZGTE powerFC has built in settings for the nissan MAF's
