How do I take off the engine cover?

I want to paint the engine cover. All I need to do is remove the nut next to the VVT-I logo as well as the oil cap, and it should come off, right?

Also, would brake paint be okay for painting it?

There are 2 nuts and 2 plastic push-in tabs. Just undo the nuts and pry up the tabs with a flat head (do it gently they break easily) and lift the valve cover off, the oil cap can stay.

I have the same color car and i painted my engine cover with some High temp paint found at walmart. It was a dupli-color metallic blue. It looks pretty good. I just cleaned it with simple green. washed it off. primed it with some plastic primer and did 3 coats.

Yeah I broke both of my plastic clips when I first took the engine cover off. I was really pissed off. Toyota charged me $1.50 each for replacements (90467-06202).

even if you do break them, you can replace them with real bolts and nuts. Your local auto parts store will have some that fit perfectly. Just bring in the existing nuts and bolt. that's what I did to my cover when I had it and painted it.

Well, I finally finished. I guess painting isn't my forte but we all learn eventually. It's a little rough, but hey, I tried.
