    Horsepower and Torque

    Hey I have a quick question. What is the primary difference between torque and horsepower? I have seen that some engines can put out the same horsepower but put out different amounts of torque. Help me on this one.

    The easiest way to think about torque is to imagine a long lever attached to the engine output. The amount of effort that the engine produces to turn this lever is the torque.

    To some degree torque is the grunt that gets things moving and horsepower is the force that keeps things moving.

    Hp is just a number the comes from an equation of torque. Generally now I mean generally when you see cars with much higher hp numbers it is at high revs ex. xrs engine and the torque is almost the same as our cars. They redline in the high 7's so hp is increased because of the torque equation. I am sure someone on here knows the equation I just forgot it.

    So if you want better acceleration more torque is required?

    Yeah, torque has a direct relationship in creating horsepower. The more torque your car can produce, the more horsepower you will get.

    so how do you expalin a desel? my father had a cummins in his coach that made about 89 HP, but with 500 and change lbs of torque.

    Horsepower (Hp) is the power output of an engine or a motor. It is a calculated number. This number is calculated from the engine's torque and the RPM at that torque. Torque is the actual twisting force on a shaft, and can be measured with a dyno.

    When an engine is put into a dyno for testing, a calibrated load is put on the engine. This is usually some kind of weight. The engine is run at full throttle, and the RPM is measured. Different loads are put on the engine, and the RPM is measured each time. With enough measurements, a torque versus RPM curve can be plotted.

    At each point, the horsepower can be calculated. The formula is:

    Hp = (Torque x RPM) / 5252

    I know that is a little bit much, but that is run down on torque and hp.

    OK I think I get it. now for one more question. since the scion tC puts out more torque but less horsepower than the XRS by 10 HP and torque is 40 ft. lbs more, will the tC be faster than the XRS even though the Scion tC weighs more?

    The equation is accurate. However, in real life your numbers will be off due to the power lost by a torque converter or clutch. Plus thermal energy is created. but for the most part the equation is accurate.
