[FIXED] :) :) :) HELP! rear drum assm.

    Ok I'm such a moron...
I just got done creating a DIY for painting your rear Brake Drums and was putting the passenger drum on when I realized that the right-side shoe would not depress. (parking brake was off) When I pressed the brake pedal, some fluid came out. I also noticed that the little boot was off of the cylander. :( Well I used a screwdriver to help depress the shoe, placed the boot back over the little cylander, and put the drum back together.
I drove down the street to test out the braking, which I noticed was a little mushier than normal. (prbably from some fluid esacping)
Well as I was braking from 20mph rool (not slamming it just depressing moderately) I heard a loud BANG from the right side. I stopped the car and pulled the E-brake (which was also easier than normal to pull). I Couldn't see anything from outside, so I drove back to the house at 10mph.
I could hear some internal parts or something scraping against the drum, but not constantly. Like, scrape scrape scrape. It was relative to how fast the wheel rotated.
So in short, I think I may need a read drum assembly and I'm not sure how much they cost. :( I'm home on leave and I need to get this fixed ASAP.
    Any suggestions?

u coulda popped the piston out of the wheel cylinder, as long as u put the piston back in the cylinder u can try to bleed that wheel and if that dosn't work u may have to get a new wheel cylinder.

yes, its bad to hit the brakes when u have the drum off the drum brakes or that front caliper off, u should never hit them

    Ok well its fixed. :)

My uncle came over and helped me fix it. He's really mechanically blessed and used to race/work on cars a lot back in the day. Thank God.
The little lever (adjuster) that links on the under side of the gear that connects to the 2-piece adjusting shaft (dunno any of the names lol) was off. Which caused pieces to FLY out inside the drum assembly...I think. Anyway, onf of the bolts that goes through the drum and holds the shoe springs tight was bent so we bent that back. We also bent the spring back. Then we reconnected the 2-piece assembly according to the driver's side because that one wasn't broken. lol

Then I took the rubber piece off of the inside of the drum assembly and used a screwdriver to mannually move the gear to push the pads out to grab the drum. Then I backed up and touched the brakes a ton of times to let the adjuster arm do the work from there. :)

you should be able to put the piston back in the wheel cylinder, But you will have to bleed the brakes to get the air out, thats why the brakes feel spongy

    Corolla_Pilot,
That's what I thought I might need to do. Never bled the brakes before though. :meh:
