A buddy in highschool got a breeding pair for a graduation present. Cost something like $1500 for the pair. He mentioned that they are a lot more work than they look - but definitely some of the coolest and most unusual pets out there

I'd be too afraid that I'd accidentally step on one or sit on one.

quills - but they're not barbed like Porky quills are. they can't "throw" quills, either.

i never said they were easy...heh. there's a reason you keep them in cages...so you don't have to worry about that.

if you like them enough to get one, read up on them first...and find a vet locally who KNOWS how to handle these guys, just in case.

Lots of sites talk about the self-anointing - my buddy's hedgies never really did that very often, but if they do - looks terrible. They go all crazy and start foaming at the mouth, like they have rabies or something - but you will eventually get used to it.

He had some leather boots that they go and lick - drove his wife nuts for a little while. He mentioned that you have to get used to their vocalization - some will squeal when scared or stressed and purr when happy and content - kind of weird coming from those little guys. Plus they seem to have a fondness for eggs - for whatever reason.

Are these going to an addition to your fish plans or replacement? You have definitely researched some very interesting pets.

these are in addition to the fish :D the fish are going to take a bit longer, since i'm having trouble having people actually follow through on getting me the housings i need.

I want to get a few of these guys and start the self-annoiunting-hedgehogs.com website. That would be awesome! I can have a web cam and every day put a new rotton peice of meat or funky item in the pen with them and people can watch them foam up and get stinky :) I can just see my bank account going though the roof with this one :)

Maybe even put some food coloring on the grose stinky items so the hedgehog will color its own quils. Sweet!

You should name it Sonic! lol j/k Ahem...
Yeah that would be cool except what is the "self-annointing" thing? Sounds really gross.

Self-Annointing I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't read it. lol I think they're cute and having one would be cool except my lab would be way too curious. :)
