    Headrest video

Has anybody ever put a LCD monitor into the back of a factory headrest? I'd like to keep my brat occupied on long trips. The kits are for sale all over ebay, they all say "easy to install", but feeling the headrest in my 03, doesn't seem like there's a lot of room inside it to put anything. Even if it would fit, what about heat buildup inside? Melted foam doesn't smell too good.

Anybody ever had Circuit City or Best Buy install something like this? If so, did they do a decent job?

Does anyone know if the spacing between the mounts on headrests and the diameter and locking system are kind of standardized, so maybe a headrest with a LCD already installed in it is available off the shelf for the 03s?

    Tnx for any help!

As far as I know there isn't a headrest out for the 03's with a screen.

A 5" or 5.6" will fit in there though, I have a 5.6" in mine. There isn't enough heat build up to melt the foam. Also I would not suggest you let circuit city or best buy do an install like that, they are sure to fuck it up. Take it to any local audio shop and they will do it for around $100 per side, if you dont have the money, go to a junk yard and get an old one out of any car and practice, it's not that hard.

Great idea (practicing on a boneyard headrest)! Thanks!

Was surfing ebay a few ago, found universal clamp-on LCD brackets. The easy way out, but looks cheap as h***.

How did you run the cables to it?

The best way to run the cables is under the carpet, then come out right next to the seat bracket at the bottom, there is a place in the seat you can run the cables up through, make sure you have the cables through before you put the headrest back on, then run them up through the headreast to the screen.

Ya and the lcd brackets are cheap as hell, plus it's easier for someone to steal them.

Was just out poking around in the car, was thinking the LCD I bought came with a tripod-type mount. Was looking at mounting it on top of the center console's lid, facing rearward. Would have to poke a couple holes in the lid (obviously), but that lid can't cost TOO much to replace if I change my mind later.

My big worry would be keeping the kid convinced to not put her feet all over it is in her best interest.

Well, apparently you have a shitty Best Buy in your area. I can vouch for the install guys at my store, they do a great job installing stuff 8)

Circuit City did the Viper ESP (alarm / starter) in my last car. Did a HORRBILE job. Bored holes all over the firewall, no grommet. Wires to alarm siren shorted first time I set it off. Brought it back, they put about 1/2 a friggin gallon of silicone in the hole, called it a grommet. Got it all over the exhaust, stunk for a while. They twisted wires together, no solder, then mass-wrapped them in dirty electrical tape that was peeling off before I got home. Gouged up my radiator mount putting the hood pin switch in. I had to go back twice...once because stepping on the brake didn't disengage the remote start run circuit, once because the alarm started going off while I was driving down the road.

Then I went to have them take it out when I traded that car in. TOLD THEM I was going to put in in my new car (the rolla), so save what they could. TOLD THEM I was trading the car in, and it had already been appraised, so don't make a mess. I swear he went under the dash with a pair of sissors and just started cutting. There were wire stubs just cut off and hanging everywhere. They also didn't remove the siren or the pin switches, just cut the wires off and left them in place. It took me almost two hours to get the car so it wouldn't actually cost me to trade it in!

    I was PISSED.

Anyways, I took what was left of the alarm / starter to Best Buy to have them put into my new rolla. The tech there couldn't believe how crappy Circ City screwed up the harnesses. He did say he could save it, but it may cost extra to replace little things that were missing or destroyed.

I got the car back 7 hours later. They did a INCREDIBLE job! Everything is soldered, neatly bundled. He used spiral-wrap and split-loom everywhere. Used the existing grommet for the wiring bundle thru the firewall. Didn't reuse the pin switch, put a mercury switch in instead. You can't tell the thing is under the dash, it looks like the factory put it there! I called the store and told the manager how impressed I was. Hopefully the tech that did the work will get some sort of kudos from it. Hell I'd kiss him if he weren't so damn ugly! ok not really...

The most amazing part....Circiut City charged me $160 to put in in like crap.
Best buy did a excellent job, and only hit me for $140.

NO Circuit Sh*tty will EVER touch one of my rides again!

Just to let people know, our Best Buy install guys have to purchase a company approved $1k tool kit to even start the job (you can elect to get it taken outa your pay over time as I remember) so that shows dedication. They also have to get certified or soemthing before they can touch a car alone.

The Circut City in our area basically just gives the installers a "How too" and they are as novice as the average DIY guy. I wouldn't trust them to install Reflective tape on a trash can. 8)

I dont know where you guys live at but i went to a little audio & video shop to get tv screens in my sunvisors, tv antenna, and the xbox installed. the little shop did a horable job with the wiring (and the placement of my tv antenna) so i took it to a Circuit City in Las Vegas and they rewired everything with Monster Cables. The picture is now crystal clear everything is plush (tv antenna is now in the roof of the car) and they installed a switch under my parking brake to turn my xbox on and off. I have had good experience with circuit shity.

Probably does matter where ya live. I'm in New England. We pride ourselves on our "who gives a crap" attitude.

Except I'm not a native New Englander. So I DO give a crap, when it comes to my rides!

feel sorry for u bro bout he cc install. i work at cc, and got the viper550 remote start on mines, and the job was superb, all wires braided and loom up, grommets, soldered connections and no problems so far. it sucks cuz the installers at my store is doin installs quality over quantity. in their training they r taught to do quantity over quality. they dont believe in such rules so they take their sweet old time doin the installs and im very impress too. so a majority of cc do quantity over quality becuz they get bonuses on how many cars they do in a month.

Wow, that "bonus for how many cars they do each month" would definatley explain why it's too easy to get a crappy job at CC.

But in no way shape or form does it JUSTIFY it.

I'll stick with BB, for anything I can't do myself. Fact is, the ONLY reason I had the 550 installed for me is because DEI chose to only warrenty the unit if it's "professionally" installed. I should have sent DEI pictures of what CC did to my ride, see if they really wanted to call them "professionals".
