    Headlight Bulbs

I would like to change the bulbs to brighter ultra white bulbs. I know the stock low beams are 9006 55w which is what this says here . However the high beams are 9005 60w which the matching pair seen here are rated as 65w. Is that okay cuz in the description it says it uses 55w. And will i notice an inprovement in lighting, or color? Anyone?

Base on the specifications, they are NOT white at all.

    Color Temperature: Approx. 3500 K

What I am using for my 9006 is that I modified 9005 to fit 9006 socket because 9005 bulbs are brighter than 9006.
The bulb I am using is Silverstar 9005 ST from Sylvania. It's whiter and brighter than stock headlight for sure.

Currently I am not using the light upgrading kit. I think the Silverstar will be even brighter with the kit.

dont take out the battery, its just a horror show. I was able to squeeze my hands in there and do it. The battery is easy to take but a pain to get back in.

I've got pretty good sized hands, I could get the low beam bulb out without moving the battery, but no way I could get to the high beam.

Good thing I'm a girl..and have fairly small hands...hehe. The headlights themselves were easy to change (low beams, never messed with the high beams). :D

I had modified SilverStar bulbs before I bought my Corolla, since this is what I did for my ///M... if you're interested in the DIY 9005 for 9006 sockets check out this site... It's for E34 BMW's, but you'll get the idea.

BTW, a 9006 bulb puts out about 1000-1100 lumen. A 9005 bulb puts out 1700-1900 lumen. HID = 3200-3400 lumen. A 9005 is about 1/2 the brightness of HID... Trust me, the mod is worth the effort.

Yeah, I learned the mod from bimmernut. It's quite easy to do this mod.

One question though. Did you compare 9006 with the modded 9005 installed in the headlight? It's better than stock for sure, Even though 9005 is rated 1700 Lumen comparing to 9006's 1000 Lumen, I don't realy feel it's twice as bright as 9006?

The 9005 isn't 2x as bright as the 9006, but it is noticably brighter, more even and has a wider spread. A cheap solution that won't have any negative consequences to the stock wiring system. A win-win!

Is the wattage in the 9005s still low enough that it wont burn out a 9006 harness, since the 9006 harness is rated at 55w, and your using a 60w bulb. I know its not that much of a diffrence in watts, but could it be enough to burn out the harness?

I also noticed that all you have to do to mod the 9005 bulbs to fit the 9006 harness is remove the two grove things inside the plug, otherwise they will fit in the headlight fine without fileing the teeth.

Im just using the wal-mart 'super white' bulbs, or whatever theyre called, about $20 a pair. I just bought them today and modified them, but when i was in the store i noticed they now cary silver stars, but not in the correct size, its the kind that arent L shaped like ours, but just straight.

    Anyway, just my 2 cents

Actually 9005 is 65w, but the extra 10watt should be ok for the harness. Don't worry.

As far as I know, Silverstar 9005 is L-shaped like the stock light bulb. If it's straight, it's not 9005.

My bad I ment the air cleaner duct on the drivers side, and i cant remove it with a philips screwdriver like the manuel said (p227). So for the past 2weeks ive been driving around with one ultrawhite bulb in and one stock bulb. :(

I was able to get my hand down there and get the bulb out. I didn't have to remove anyhting with any tools. I unplugged the harness then turned the bulb and out it came. No tools requited. Guess I got lucky.
