Why do you say that?? I have heard of several people who have gotten quality HID kits to work just fine in the factory housing. It was pretty much plug n play.

oem reflectors that are designed to not use hid... will cause: 1) glare - for on coming traffic, 2) bad beam pattern, 3) bad light output

you can use hid on your stock reflectors... and thats fine... ull just get ppl flashin their high beams at you. thats why i changed over to projectors.

if you get hid, youll notice that the light output is more concentrated in the middle.. and around that area... you will get a lot of light... those light are the glare that im talkin about...

heres a pic of the stock reflector halogen and projector metal halide

youll notice that on the right (oem)... there isnt much glare... but once you switch over to hid... the light output is about 3 times higher... and the stock reflector isnt designed to contain/direct the mass amount of light outputted by the metal halide system. therefore you will get mass amount of glare... which is bad for oncoming traffic...

hid is cool... hid with projectors is much cooler and safer... :D

and hid kits can cost from 250-600 bucks. just depends on the brand and type you want... a generic made in china, plastic ballast housing... rebased bulb will cost less then a german made alum/steel ballast housing... which is also sealed (water resistant), and german made bulbs... higher color tems also cost more then lower color temps...

it all comes down to... how much u wanna spend on ur baby... dats alll...

Sean2sean sent me some pics of those projectors retro fitted damn they look bad ass I would recommend them for who ever has the money to do it. It's pretty much the system that expensive cars use.

I guess I don't know what you guys mean by glare. Glare from objects that the light is hitting in front of you, such as another car?? Or is the beam pattern on the road not as focused? I would really like to do an HID conversion but would like to use the factory headlamps to save time and money. However, if it would be too ghetto, or not enough improvement, I don't want to do it at all. I guess I would like to know what the real differences are. I thought about doing an HID kit for my '93 S4 (which uses projectors) but I have read that the reflectors are so crappy that there isn't that much improvement. The '92-'95 S4's were just plagued with crappy lights, even though they are projectors.

Anyway, I figured that because the stock headlights on the Corolla are much better than my S4, that the Rolla would be a good candidate for the conversion. At least it would make better use of the extra light. Some people that i have talked to seem to be really happy with the results from just installing an HID kit into factory housings. I don't know if these people have low expectations or not because I haven't seen either of their cars in person. I would like to have all the information possible before I invest the money. Thanks for your time.

So in the picture I am seeing a regular halogen bulb on the right and an HID bulb on the left. Are both right and left using the oem headlamp assemblies?? Or do you have a projector in the left?? Also, what color temperature is the HID that you have in the left? Thank you for educating me, I just want to know what to expect.

the right is reflector with halogen bulb... notice a slight glare on the outside contratrated area?

on the left, its a 6k metal halide bulb with valeo projector retrofitted into stock housing. notice the sharp cutoff, and no clare above the cutoff line?

aftermarket hid is illegal now... ppl complain that it glares too much... so a lot of places dont sell em anymore... projector retro fit is fine... because it doesnt cause any glare... and all projector retrofit equipment is dot certfied... but... just the retrofitting part is not. =)
