rebuild would be a good Idea. How much power does the turbo put down?

Yes, but if you rebuild it you will have a fresh engine and you can put in forged low compression pistons and forged rods. If you are serious about the turbo that is a must. Here's what I would do:

Since you want a turbo right away (which I gather from your post), go ahead and boost your current engine. 85k isn't that bad. Just tune it carefully and don't go over 7 psi or so.

Once you decide you want more boost, rebuild the engine with all the right internals, and crank it up! :)

If you need a hand just let me know.

ahhh screw it ... boost that bitch...

I turbo'd @ 83K and it rocked fine for 30-40K after that. :) (i didnt blow the motor, my car got blasted off the planet by a dumbshit in a van who didn't wanna stop at a red light)

Yeah....I'm kinda saying the same. Not that I know jack about FI (other than the basics). But anything under 150K on a Toyota I consider low mileage ;)

Hell, my 1990 3S-FE Camry got dissected and rebuilt @ 225K. Little did dad and I know but the engine didn't need it...the inside of it looked pretty much new with no wear that I could see. Rebuilding was a waste of $1000...honestly. We just did b/c it had high miles - which....was....a....waste...of...$$$$$

Mine should be rebuilt, it has 328 000 kms on it, but that damn thing still runs perfectly (except for a bit of burning oil), im going to get the engine tuned up soon, but other than that, it doesnt need much... gota love toyotas :D

i love it when people say ' im only going to be running 8-10psi ' - 99% of them will try to boost that bitch as high as they can possibly do it. :)

what if you have a 99 corolla, and you want to swap the engine with like lets say an 01-02 engine, will the turbo be affected becuase of the fact it has VVT-I? I read somewhere on this post, it's better to get the turbo on a non vvt-i engine. Does anyone know if that is true? Becuase that's what i plan on doing here in the next 2 years myself. I'm saving up now and when i get to Japan, I'm going to begin buying parts.

if you're saving money to go to japan to buy parts for your usdm corolla..dont bother

when i was in japan last year, their corolla and our corolla are completely different..

10-12 psi daily isn't the safest..nor the smartest on stock internals..try doin 6-7 psi..and keep it there until you beef up the internals, or intend to blow the shit out of it

man I still think they should bring the Levin here :( but boost ur ride rolla engines can last a long F*ing time....wish I had that luck but thats another story which Vortex knows..anyhow dont try to pass 7psi on ur stock internals cause our stock internals can only take soo much abuse specially our valve seals :( but keep us posted on the outcome..Also Vortex Imma be droppin some cash in the engine I need to ask u about some springs and valves so hit me up!

hey thanks I didn't know that. I assumed that the US corolla engine came from Japan, and I was just going to get parts for it over there cheaper. Like forged pistons and links all the stuff needed to boost the engine itself, and then maybe move on to turbo. Have anyone actually done a port and polish on their corolla yet ? Well the engine anyway is what I'm saying

My Corolla is got 97K and I'm about to boost it, might rebuild later on but for now I'll boost it and if the motor blows I'll have a better reason to get another one hehehe :)
