    Fancy Shift Sound Question

What is that sound that is emitted when tuner cars shift gears? I only saw that in video games, sounds like a rifile fire shot, but yesterday, I heard the exact same sound on en eclipse as the guy raced passed the resturant. What is that thing and what is it called, what does it do??

Summarized in one sentence, the blow/pop off valve(BOV) releases or bleeds excessive pressure from the turbo intake side to prevent the turbine fan blade from rotating in the wrong direction. Hence the loud hissing noise. If it did rotate in the opposite direction, it would prove to be disastrous.
