Nothing new - they were doing it on Mercedes engines (AMG and tuner's like RENNTech) for some time - only made the news when they started on cars that most people could afford (Contour SVT). Actually started out in aerospace components (aircraft hydraulic and fuel systems). By adjusting how quickly the abrasive putty or slurry was pumped into the intake - you can tailor the honing process to a specific powerband. Was the only good way to smooth out the long intake runners where conventional honing processes couldn't get to or was not cost effective. Note that it only works well if the density of the material at hand is uniform and design of the head - otherwise you would end up losing power.

the intake manifolds on the 98-00 corollas are extrude hone aluminum from factory. makes it lighter and smoother, not to mention the manifold is long, contributes to why the 1zz makes more torque than its predecessor

I thought honing was just something you did when you have cylinder ridge.
