    Extra plug? Loose harness?

I was installing a new headunit and I noticed something odd when I removed the trim around the shifter. There was a set of wires that were bundled together with two plugs/harnesses coming out of it. One harness was attached to the cigerette lighter and the other one was hanging loose. Its a grey harness, and fairly small. Is it supposed to be like that? Or did I yank something loose when I pulled off the trim? What's that plug for?

i think if you hunt you'll find lots of mystery plugs.

if you can only make one harness and have it fit every option, its cheaper. (even if theres extra stuff) thats why the factory alarm, and cruse (and any other dealer option) can be added with no re wire....

That's the lighting connector for the cigarette lighter. Does your cigarette lighter illuminate when the headlights are on?

No, there's nothing on my cigarette lighter that lights up, with my headlightes on or off. If that is a power source, I could probably use it to light my neons right?

I have a 2004 S and that plug you speak of is not used. I remember it sitting there when I first ripped apart my interior:) I am not sure what you could use it for.

The green wire will have 12 volts on it when the lights switch is not off (parklights or main headlights on). The white/black wire goes to the rheostat. You could use the green wire for power and put in your own wire to ground the neons.

It's not used? I have the exact same car and it most certainly is used in mine. Just like oxymoron said, it connects to the lighting of the cigarette lighter.

Lighting of the cigarette lighter?????? There is no light for the cigarette lighter. You have an S? because mine does not light up and is not capable of lighting up.

Possibly a difference between the CDN and US models? I noticed that the rolla the site owner uses in his DIYs just has a cover over the socket and no light around it, whereas mine has a lighted 'halo' around the socket and an actual lighter to use...

Well that must be it then. The US models do not have the light thus the hanging wire.

That's exactly it. Just looking at the toyota.ca vs. toyota.com sites you can see the difference

Was there some US law passed against the use of those cigarette lighters or something?
