    Engine Probs

OK, i was drivin along today, and i decided to gun it down the road w/ my little ol 96 4afe(auto)....the way i drive (if i wanna fly), start in L, then rev REAL HARD-bringing rpms up right away, then switch to 2-continuing my fast and furious behavior..ANYWAY...i revved real hard in L, my engine started to make farting sounds-like hesitating thumps, bom bom bom bommmm....i was like "oh shit! eeeeasse of big fella!" i dont think i broke anything (no smoke! no other wierd noises) Does ANYONE KNOW WHAT THAT MIGHT BE? thanks for reading!

oh god, you might have the same problem as mine lol. i dunno what it is either. probly too much pressure stacking up on each other in the cat. well i dont know what the hell im talking about. but try to run your car again, like the same thing that you did. and see what happens.

you might have bent a valve. if so, the more you drive, and ESPECIALLY the more you continue revving your engine unnecessarily (your "fast and furious behavior" ) the worse it will get. Or you may have damaged your transmission, seeing as how you are abusing it. Bottom line is, you keep drivin like that, your car will take a shit. It's a corolla, not a ferrari. I know, I drove like you in my 99 auto - abused the hell out of it.... and completely destroyed my transmission in the process.

i just switched to synthetic oil too, would that have anything to do with it? the car was runnin fine until this "accident" happened...and i decided that I WILL GIVE UP MY FAST AND FURIOUS ways from now on! AND it makes that clankin when the car is in park or in neutral after big revs-once im moviing-i dont hear it anymore-so i dont think its the tranny....but you might be right.... :(

hehe that reminds me of what happens when you boost a 98/99 corolla over the MAP sensor's capable threshold. Right at 4.75v the engine does the same thing trying to cut fuel and all kinda stupid stuff. 3bar fixed it in my case though, LOL. However, thankfully I don't have any rattles from that... that would scare me.

I think i heard that sound from my friend's celica (GT) when he was revving once. He just got a 00 auto so he was at school revving for everyone but i noticed a bom bom bom after a high rev. I asked him if he was redlining it, but he said he wasn't looking. lol im scared to try that kinda stuff.

sounds like the rev limiter. i had to house-sit once for this cheap-ass lady who owns one of those C240 benz and a 525 bimmer with 5 speed. she didnt pay or give me anything for my services coz she's a friend of my bro. :(
anyways, she told me where the car keys are. so... i take both car out for a spin, wheeeeeee :) when i rev the C240 to redline and over, same thing happens - it farts/backfire. feels like it's running with one less cylinder.

Is it really? b/c ive heard that it's not gonna really "hurt" anything-it just depends exactly when you shift...but i might be wrong-from now on im not gonna do it, but it really helps out ALOT if you wanna pass someone quick-just drop into 2, and bye bye! i guess it is harsh on the tranny...

Its also hard on the engine as evidenced.

Ask VAMP about dropping it into 2.

I wasn't the one driving, but lets just say that I needed a whole new engine after the asshole behind the wheel downshifted to 2. The car over revved to 1250 RPMS past redline.

Vamp, how fast were you going when the guy downshifted to 2nd-be aware that mine is only a 3 speed-so its only one shift downwards-but since i dont have a tach-im not gonna do it anymore-im afraid i might of exceeded that high a few times...

I don't recall. He was speeding and downshifted to slow down so he wouldn't hit a car. Grrrr, if I ever see his face again...

    Manual > *

    :p

I've hit the rev limiter a few times, but I'm not stupid enough to downshift when I'm at 6000rpm..heh

only reason i downshift from drive to 2 is when i'm goign uphill at 2500-3000 rpms and need that extra power to get up there faster..but once i hit 5000, i'm shifting no matter waht lol
