Engine Engine noise

    Engine noise

    2003 Corolla CL, 5 speed, 66,000 km

    The engine makes a loud ticking noise for about 60 seconds after cold star. This only happens in the morning after the car has been parled for at least 12 hours.
    It sounds like the timing chain/ tensionner noise and comes from that end of engine.
    The noise goes away ar higher RPM.

    Any suggestions.

    It sounds like the owner is not putting thr right gas, use shell v-power ++ is the best, no cheap stuff.

    ahhhhh...I personally say screw the V-power stuff.

    Sorry, dude, don't get me wrong - to each their own.

    But Toyota says 87 octane because that's what the engine was designed to run on, IMHO. Higher octane burns slower which just contributes to more carbon deposits and LESS power. Our engines can't take advantage of higher octane b/c the spark advance curve programmed into it's little silicon brain doesn't know how.

    The rattling is either a) idler/tensioner pulley or b) valve noise or c) piston slap (when it's close to or below freezing). My 2003 Corolla does the same thing and I truthfully don't know which it is. The 1ZZ engine isn't notoriously quiet, either.

    I took my car to the dealer last winter and left it overnight to let them cold start it and they told me it was piston slap. Nothing can be done and it shouldn't cause any problems according to them. It's caused by tighter piston-to-cylinder clearances. Just baby it until it warms up...only thing you can do. It's a bad idea to abuse a cold engine anyhow.

    Thanks for your help
    I heard that it may be caused by low oil pressure to the timing chain tentioner.
    Also I stop using Shell and switch to low sulfur gas from Irving Oil to see if it helps.
    The dealer wants me to leave the car overnight but I can't schedule this now.
    I will keep everyone posted.

    Mine does it also. I think it is piston slap. It sounds exactly like my built 5.4 ford engine upon start up. The aluminum piston needs time to come up to temp and expand. After it has expanded the noise goes away.
    I don't know if the 1zz-fe has aluminum pistons, but I would guess it is the case. I have done several oil analysis on the corolla oil and it would appear that there is no extra wear because of this.
