    Engine modifications

I need to squeeze some more horsies out of my 'lil 1.7. There are the obvious mods such as air intake and exhaust (including header and cat-back) but what are some other things I could do. I'm talking about things like maybe using an 03+ intake plenum, bigger throttle body, parts of a celica or scion, etc. I'm not technically declined in the least so that in no way scares me. I'm looking for things that I could snatch out of a junkyard or relatively inexpensive aftermarket parts. Any help is appreciated.

It's a 1.8, not a 1.7. As far as horsepower goes, an intake is the most cost effective. Bored throttle bodies or different intake manifolds won't make a difference unless you tune it with a piggy back. Do the basics. I/H/E. Other than that, you'll need some drastic add ons like forced induction. If you want large gobs of horsepower, you're better off getting a different car.

Never said anything about gobs of power. And sorry my GFs civic has the 1.7L. Now in saying I/H/E do you mean intake, header, exhaust or intake, head, exhaust?

It's the first one. Intake, header, and exhaust. That should give you enough oomph to make it driveable. :D LOL I know what you mean.

I put an AEM V2 on my GFs '03 Civic EX, do they make a good product for the our cars or should I seek out another brand?

Exhaust is a touchy subject for me since I'm used to the V8 sound and anything raspy would turn me off.

There was only one company that ever made a CAI for the 8th gen Corolla and they discontinued them. The E.L. Prototypes CAI is extremely rare now. I only have one since I got one several years ago when they were still selling them. You'll find a lot of short air intakes though if that's what you like. SAI's have weak low end and good top end. CAI's have great low end a moderate top end. SAI's have a bad low end since the filter is subject to heat soak from being right next to the motor. You can fabricate your own CAI if you have access to a MIG welder, 3 inch steel tubing, and a metal cutter.

Yea I know all about the heat soak issue. My Camaro had an open element style air filter on it and the thing would run balls-to-the-walls in the cold and when first started but on hot days and after warming up would run worth a damn. I had a friend that built one out of PVC piping but I'm not too keen on that idea. I know how to weld stick, mig, and tig but I am without a welder unfortunately. But I guess anything is better than stock, I'll have to spend some time under the hood and figure out if I can do something with it.

Wider would be better for top end since it would have a larger reservoir of air. The only reason, ELP used 2.5" is because they wanted to make the tube fit through the resonator box hole.

Make sure you keep the tube 2.5" in where the MAF located. Otherwise you will mess up the MAF reading unless you have standalone.

They seem to have alot of good products but also seem to be a bit overpriced. Thanks for the link though.

DOT. is selling his ELPrototypes CAI. Jump on it. They are the best CAI you can get for the 8th gen. These are extremely rare.
