As long as you have the manual and all the parts needed and follow the instructions, you're okay. However - do keep in mind to make sure you put back every cam bolt back in the same place it came from - something about putting them in all over the place does wierd shit to them actually holding the cam down right...

easy to do a valve adjustment (98 corolla)

Ever since Ive had my car (98 corolla) ive never had a valve adjustment performed on it. I have approx 116,000 miles on it. Should I get one done. Im getting bad performance from the engine and valve noises. Is it easy to do it myself? I have a haynes manual with step by step instructions and it looks easy enough. Also if I remove the valve cover to check the valve clearance and then install the valve cover with the new gasget but then remove the valve cover again to install the new lifters would I need to install a new valve cover gasket. In other words do I have to install a new gasget every time I remove the valve cover. Just want to make sure I do this right so I dont f*** anything up. I have decent mechanics skills and know my way around in the engine well.

and also torque them down to the required specs, because if you over torque them, they like to snap... and for the gasket, i'd recommend getting a new one, but if it is a rubber gasket, you wont have to replace it again for awhile, unless you damage it...

I don't think my car has ever had a valve adjustment..at least not from 113k to 151k -- how do I tell when/if I need one?

im not sure if my car needs one or not..... I just want to check it out. I mean its kinda interesting to see underneath the valve cover. Although this morning I removed all the bolts and the valve cover will not budge. Is there something im doing wrong. I am noticing a loss of power though and a little clicking noise in the top end of the engine so thats why I was going to check the valves.
