I remember getting into a discussion about it on one of the corolla boards about 5 months ago at least. Came down to some users saying just get a real lsd.

O i get it now. I think what he means by "real lsd" is that we should go with the whole pumpkin unit instead of just gettin the little conversion unit. But the real reason i started this thread is because i wanted to know from someone who really has the phantomgrip how they feel about it.

"the whole pumpkin" refers to rwd vehicles..... i think you mean a factory or aftermarket lsd carrier assembly

i think the phantom grip is an extremely good product seeing as how lsds run up near 800 bucks plus install, and the phantom grip performs the same operation

Quaife is THE company for LSD's. use google to get there site.

Phantomgrip should have an explanation of how it works on their site.

    Differences..

    Quaife - $1000+

    PhantomGrip - ~$300

Quaife is a 'real' differential with a lifetime warranty, even when raced. The PhantomGrip basically converts your existing differential to a limited-slip without strengthening it.

KAAZ > Quaife. want proof? http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/kaazvstorsen.asp

but i still like my tochigi fuji. i can leave 2 burnout spots. most people can only leave one. it grips like nasty but gives torque steer like nasty too... damn fwd. this is my last fwd car that i will tweak out.

We all know kaaz is one of the best lsd. Problem is i looked at their product list, The only lsd they make for 1zz-fe is for MR-S. So what's the deal?

And blancokracker - TRD lsd costs less compared to Quaife.

i prefer clutch types. best is really dependant on what kind of driving/racing you do. those that race drag will prefer a helical type. the helical lsds work straight off the bat. you are at a dead stop and they are working. the clutch type lsds are like giant synchros. for a synchro to work, shit has to start slipping. so you gotta wait till you start moving for the clutch type to work. BUT, a helical is like a one time use lsd. once that thing breaks, shards of $1000 pieces of metal start to fly. once helical lsds break, they are also known to take trannies out with them. they are non rebuildable. the clutch type lsds are very adjustable. most come with user configureable aggressiveness (sorry for all the improv words). meaning, you can specify how aggressive the lsd will perform. clutch packs are side "A" and "B". the most aggressive setup would be ABABABABA (depending on how many clutches). to make it more streetable and to prevent the lsd from getting pissed off and clicking and grinding at you in parking lots you would set it up something like ABAABBABA. that's a very un-aggressive setup. the clutch type lsds are also rebuildable. you will know when your lsd is having trouble with it's job. simply replace the clutchpacks and you are done rebuilding the lsd. mind you, even my stock TFS LSD occasionally gets pissed off at me. especially in the morning if it's cold. i pull out and i hear grinding and clicking. best solution for this is GM or Penzoil synchromesh. mine's a clutch type.

so for everyday use and occasional autocross and drag racing... a clutch type 1.5 way would be best?
