it may be possible but i'm sure it'd be a hell of alot easier folding them down...why wouldn't you want to?

If you don't have folding seat backs you can pull up the seat cushion up at each seating location (L&R), and it will expose the bolts used to hold the seat back in place.

Has anyone manage to change their rear speakers without folding down the rear seats on a 98-02 Corolla?

You mean just pull the seat backcushions toward the front of the car and it will expose the bolts? I didn't think the backcushions of the rear seats would come out.

Just lay on your back inside the trunk.

It is 2 sections, the seat back and seat bottom, The bottom has to come up first. In the areas of the seat bottom where a passenger would sit ( left & right ) towards the front edge of the seat are 2 pins that hold it in place. Gently lift up to release each side and then it can be lifted up and out. It will the reveal the bolts to take out the seat back.

If you have a model with the baby car-seat anchors on the back deck, peel the plastic covers from the top and it will reveal the bolts to take them out.

Nah.. just lay in there and look up. You'll see the speakers in all of their glory. :)

you dont have to take the rear seat out. do this:
take the middle brake light out. disconnect the light.
take off the 3 little plastic clips on the deck.
    unscew those bolts.
pull up on the deck from the front side.
    unscrew the speakers.
    BAM!
