I heard alot of things about the darkside of the Corolla the Prizm but is it really the same as the Corolla? and i know the prizm is cancelled but do they still do this to the other GMs? a Toyota on a GM and vice versa or is it the Civic who is the dark side of you Corolla owners

ok, GM and Toyota have a partnership. GM produces toyota products(ever hear of the Pontiac Vibe? it's a matrix...), and uses toyota technology(the new vvt engine in the n/a cobalt ss is based on toyota technology). at one point, for a very short period of time, toyota also sold a cavalier in asia. it did not sell well, but cavalier owners can still get toyota parts for their cavs through toyota. trd even had parts available for the car. do a little research on the 'net - you'd be surprised what you find out.

here's a starting point: google Toyota Cavalier.

whats wrong with toyota having a partner ship with GM... makes the GM cars stronger helps with R&D for toyota... I don't se why you need to go and find a japanese car with out an american past... which by the way is imposable

I'm talking about their plant in Cambridge, Ontario. Do some research and ye shall see...

    From some articles...

"I should say that while I am impressed, I'm not surprised at the quality of the new Corolla. After all, it is a Toyota, and it is built in the award winning Cambridge, Ontario plant, (TMMC) the same renowned factory that produces the stylish and versatile Lexus RX330."
    http://www.roadandtravel.com/roadtests/reviews/2005roadtests/newcarreviews/toyotacorollaxrs.htm

"Speaking of Lexus: the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) plant in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, is where the Corolla and its platform fraternal twin the Matrix are being built. The production plans call for about 225,000 Corollas per year and 70,000 to 75,000 Matrices. (Corollas are also produced at the GM-Toyota NUMMI joint venture facility in Fremont, California, which is also the source of the Matrix-derived Pontiac Vibe, which will be modified with right-hand-steering for sale in Japan as the Voltz.) The TMMC plant will become the first factory outside of Japan to build a Lexus."
    http://www.autofieldguide.com/columns/gary/0102oncar.html

"Designs for the American Corolla came out of Toyota's California design center in Newport Beach, with assembly occurring at a California plant in Fremont which Toyota operates in joint-venture with General Motors, and at Toyota's Canadian factory in Cambridge, Ontario."

not all corollas were built in the US or canada there are some that are actually built in Japan. For instance my 98 LE and my 01 S were built in Japan. it was not till mid year of 01 that they were being produced in other areas such as the US and Canada. I found this out then the dealer asked if the car was built here or overseas. i did not know until i gave them the VIN# and i was informed of this. Then i took a look at the Manufactured Date and it has 02/2001.I even called up the Toyota Customer Care and they said the same thing. Yes there is a difference in engine setups as to computer systems. Not much but notable. How the dealer can tell if it from N/A or Japan i have no idea but they can tell right off the bat.Which freaked the hell outta me.

why do you have such a problem with GM?

GM is probably THE biggest car manufacturing conglomerate in the world. they have their fingers in everything...from Subaru to Saab, they have access to all the technology they want. they're a GOOD car manufacturer as well...older(first and second generation) cavaliers are known to run for 200k miles or more without issue. mine had 250k, and was still going strong.

furthermore, if it hadn't been for GM, the Corolla would never have been the most popular small car in the world. GM enabled Toyota to sell cars in larger quantities over here.

i just want to nkow what your deal is with GM. they have better repair ratings than Nissan...and if they were connected with BMW, the price would be astronomical(and you probably wouldn't be able to afford one).

    it's in the VIN...

    *sighs*

i truly wonder how folks like this would handle the idea of V8s in true imports(RX7, Datsun Z, etc). one would think they'd be too confused to handle it.

I think the reason some people have problems with Toyota and GM having a partnership is because GM is generally regarded as lower down the automotive food chain by many of us (including me, although the new Cobalt is nice...)

Even if GM does have a better repair rating than Nissan, that's not that impressive, alot of Nissan's are outdated right now (like the Sentra... time for a new model Nissan) and GM does have better vehicles in most cases (i'd take a Silverado over a Titan, a Cobalt over a Sentra, a Corvette over a 350Z, I wouldn't take either one of their minivans though, but I would take an Altima over any midsize in the same price range)... but what happens when you compare Toyota to GM? I don't think there is one GM i'd take over a comparable Toyota model... and Toyota is more reliable...

Not saying that GM isn't a decent manufacturer (some of their vehicles are pretty damn good), they are just not up to Toyota's level imo...

I agree with that, GM makes better vehicles than some importe brands (Mitsubishi is a great example, lol)... Its just like racism, but for cars :)

"Oh no, you're an american car, I hate you (even though im american)!" -- Sounds pretty stupid, but yah... all someone has to do is go drive a new Chevrolet Cobalt LS/LT and then go drive a Sentra... they'll see american's are capable of making competitive cars when they get their act together...

Granted, I'd take a Toyota over any GM product anyday, but take another look.
Ok, most "domestic" cars are junk. But the SUV and truck market was invented and run by the Big Three.
Yes my buddy Craig has a 5.7L 350 in his suburban, he's got 10 more horsepower than my 4.7L and maybe 15 lb/ft less. But not only will he tow up hills in his final gear (Where I'll probably be in 3rd) but engine in his Chevy will still run just as long as a Toyota with the exact same maintance.

Where GM seriously fails in comparison to Toyota is the little things.
Squeeks in the dash, maybe a power lock solenoid goes out, you might lose a lightbulb in your dash.

Block to block, "American" V-8's are going to out-pull and out-run the "imported" trucks all day long.

And by the way, my Tundra was an American Import. ...meaning it was built in Indiana! :D

yes, but if you're just telling them your VIN they can tell rather quickly where it was made.

truth is any car is good but will only remain that way depending on how you drive it. Yeah we buy american vehicles but it is only the trucks. if its a car it will be either foreign or import. A few reasons the Asian Manufactures do not put big V8' are because of size, gas, and other markets where big engines are not needed. the american v8's are stronger built because they have already succeded this in the earlier era of cars, whereas the asians and europeans where still improving the smaller inline sixes, fours, two's(fiat) and some v6's (though those are rare). The only way i will ever buy and american car is if its the most basic of basic. american cars do better when they are basic then with all the power additons (p/w,p/l etc.) Some other manufactures do better than others because of the amount of time of engineering they put into it. but even then they still have thier problems take a look at BMW and Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. these are known to have a large amount of electircal problems. We have owned all three brand in the past and right now and i can vouch of the problems they have new and old.So every car company has thier ups and downs but its all on how you treat it altoghether.

Still I Hate American Cars Even If I Am One

:p OK so your some of you are saying mitsubishi is an import your wrong the new Eclipse is designed and the prototype is made by gm thats why its big
and the las japanese corolla sedans are built in the 1990s and the corolla GT-S is one of the latest japanese built but thats in 1991 so we never had it in almost 15 years if Toyota had stayed japanese we shouldve had RWD Truenos but will look like a Celica. and toyota wouldve made diesel Tundras too if there is no GM Toyota will be number 1, no Hummers and we'll have a cooler environment too if the americans wouldve made more economic trucks and cars and people dont need that power besides the power to weight ratio suck anyway i like 600cc cars better than the V8s and will definitely pick the 600cc even if the V8 GTO is for free

its mitsubishi so it still sucks.even if GM did it for them it still has not sold to meet its quarter cuota for sales.I can't really understand the rest of what you are saying since its all broken up,fix it and i can write back. sentences are too long.

good LORD that was painful to read. i'm going to try and translate it, just so i can respond.
you're contradicting yourself here. you just called GM the "dark side" before...so which is it, good or bad? and you did just demonstrate how fine the line is separating "imports" and "domestics" - it's just a badge, now. FURTHERMORE, i don't recall reading that GM designed the Eclipse...prove that one to me, if you will.
if there were no GM, Toyota wouldn't have been as successful in the United States, and you probably wouldn't be driving a Corolla.

I can field this one. The reason Toyota is standing by on building a 3/4 ton diesel Tundra is because of the prices. They are waiting for the introduction of biodiesel before releasing that model of the Tundra.

    I don't know if I'd dig a 600 cc car...my bike's a 598, but it only weighs 415 lbs. :p

Keep in mind too, that all car manufacturers are in business. It's not about what people need, it's about what they want and what they'll pay for. Back in the 60's and 70's, the trend was towards big cars with tons of power. Then the gas crisis hit, the automotive industry changed it's ways towards higher mileage cars...if you look over the last decade, the size and power of cars have been going back up.

Id still like to see proof that the Eclipse was developed by DaimlerChrysler, the engine Chrysler had used that is originally from Mitsubishi was the 4 cylinders and the 3.0 V6... all their engines after that we're developped in house (the 2.7 V6, the 3.2 V6, the 3.5 V6 the 5.7 V8 hemi, etc.)

personally i know it was chrysler but if you notice i said (EVEN if GM did build it) diamlerchrysler own 60% of mitsubishi either way.

the computer systems set up are the same thing, the All V6's were co-developed with mitsu, the V8's were fully developed by D-C.
