    Cruise control without cruise control

So, I'm in 5th gear riding down the interstate. In fifth gear, at any speed over around 60mph: I push the clutch in and let off the gas but the engine rpms stay where they are. At around 70, the engine is at 3000rpm. I push the clutch and the engine stays right at 3000rpms like I'm giving it gas, even though I'm not. It eventually drops to idle, but takes around 10 seconds or so and does it and very slowly at that. Never happens in any other gear, just 5th.

Any ideas why this happens? It's done it since brand new. Just kind of quirky I think but why??

Well, yeah I know. The car does not have cruise control on it. It's a CE - no options other than the basics. When I'm on the interstate, it just feels like I have cruise control on b/c when I let off of the gas, it's like I'm still giving it gas - even though I'm not. It doesn't speed UP, but it doesn't slow down either. Then if I push the clutch in, the engine continues to rev at whatever rpm it is at for several seconds and then it slowly falls to idle.

Doesn't do it ALL the time, but most of the time on the interstate it does this.

no no no no. It only does it in 5th gear....never any other gear. It's something in the ECU tuning that causes it to do that. I've heard something about the EGR because when going from throttle to no throttle (lifting your foot off the gas), NOx emissions rise for a few seconds. I think it's some kind of safeguard to keep emissions down.

Just curious what you all have heard.
