engine is all stock, approximate mileage per tank i dont know but its significantly less than before, according to the gauges anyway. i suspect the guages may be the culprit because like i said when i stop they go up when i accel they go down, u can actually see it go down and up

well, if you say you're driving in the city, that's probably got something to do with it. stop-and-go traffic is hell on a car.

To find out if it is your gauges or not... fill up your tank completely to the top, drive it around until you get to about 100 miles or so... then fill it up again exactly like you did before... look at how much gas you put in, then figure out with the exact mileage you drove and the gallons you put in, how many MPG you go, if its over 20 mpg or so... then you know its probably just your gauge that is messing up, if its well below 20mpg then you have some issues with your car that would need to be fixed (and don't drive hard when you do the test, just drive regularly...)

    corolla with hummer gas milage

i dont kno what the hell is the dealis it my gauges or is it my ecu anyway in the past few weeks my cars been guzzling gas to the tune of like 10 miles to the gallon anf my fuel gauge jumps up and down, when i go the gas goes down like one bar from its position with the car off and when i stop it goes back up the gas tank doesnt seem to have any leaks or anything, can i fiz this with some new gauge or somethin or is it an ecu problem?

Lol. How much gas are you getting between fill-ups, what are your driving habits ie, are you pedal all the way down or up, city, or highway, and is your check engine light on, and how old is your car?

even track use on a stock corolla should not drop below 15.

    that better...

what about any modifyers, do you have intake, exhaust, or anything else done to it......have you been messing around with your a/f ratios? gas you smell gas, is your car bogging down when you punch the throttle, how is the over all performance since you noticed your gas milage decline,? Is your idle high?

Basically, how much mileaeg are you getting per fill up, and how much gas are you putting in per fillup?

    haha damn thats nuts...

I put my 550cc injectors in the other day (gonna try to returbo tonight) and i've been still getting at least 25mpg untuned (just put in some figures for injector compensation in the eManage to stabalize idle until I get everything into the car.

The above thing is too complicated...just fill up your tank, reset your odometer, and drive until your guage says its getting near empty. Then fill up again......if youre only putting in 8 gallons, then ya know its the guages. If your putting in 12 or 13, (or whatever the gallong capacity is, I forget..isnt it 12.4?), then ya know its not your guages.

    Pretty simple.

Mine moves around quite a bit too - depends on the road conditions and how cold it gets. Might be a grounding issue with the gauge or sending unit. You might want to check and make sure the wiring coming off the sending unit are not frayed or have insulation peeled off. Otherwise - see what mileage you are getting - teevee247 and e_andree have good tips on keeping track of your mileage. Mileage might not be as bad as you think - as gauges aren't always 100% accurate.

Just go test your mileage and then give us the results... we don't even know yet if its a gauge problem or actual mileage problems...

the whole stop and go thing....the gas doesnt just stay at the bottom of ur tank. it shifts around when u stop then start then stop then start. that will mess with your sensor.

Yeah - that sounds a little strange. On every car I've ever driven, the gas gauge moves around. Since the gauge is at the front of the tank, when you accel or are facing uphill, the fuel gauges goes down. Braking or facing downhill, the gauge goes up. I've seen the needle move 1/4 of a tank frequently on my friends 1995 Corolla. But the needle usually moves very slowly, not hardly fast enough to notice the needle moving because fuel gauges don't usually react that fast.

The ONLY way you'll know your true gas mileage is to do what's already been suggested. Fill, drive until empty, then refill. Miles divided by gallons equals mpg.

Sounds like a problem with the fuel gauge - or maybe yours is just a little more sensitive than most.

I think there is a problem with Corolla gas gauges (93-97 ones at least). Mine tends to bounce around alot too. Recently I was on a fairly long road trip and the gauge would read abnormally low. When the gauge said I had 1/2 a tank I would stop to get gas and the pump would auto shut off after only 2 gallons....

So, I don't think you're alone in having a crazy gas gauge. Toyota probably will fix it if you take your car in.

mine used to in my 94...it would drop ever so slowly until it reached 1/4 tank, then you could watch it fall to E...and it would be completely empty when the idiot light popped on.

Its kinda funny though b/c in gm cars, like the 96 lumina I had before my 98 corolla, the gas guage would move fast. But the gas guage moves slowly. As far as checking the miles per gallon you dont really have to wait until it gets empty. An easier way to do it is to just fill it up until the pump clicks off then reset the trip odometer and drive around for say about 100 miles. Then go back and fill it up again until the pump clicks off. Divide the 100 miles by the amount of gallons you put into the car. So it should be about 3.5 gallons for the proper city mileage of 28 mpg.

lol why make it so difficult?

to find out gas mileage, divide miles driven by gallons used..
