Converting a 1ZZFE Tranny to bolt up to a 4A or 7A engine...

This is hazer00's tranny, he shipped it up to me for the conversion. The bellhousing is from a C52 tranny off a 4AGE, and the tranny is from a 1ZZFE. It will now bolt up to his 7AFE.

And that's what the inside of our tranny's look like

Nicely done! But what benefits would it have? Better gearing? Stronger Internals? I could see a use for the 6 Speed from the XRS/GTS being useful perhaps...?

Well, he did it because he had bought a 1ZZFE tranny and he didn't realize that it wouldn't fit on his 7AFE. Plus, you figure that you can pick up a nice, low mileage tranny from a 1ZZFE and use that when the A series engines are getting older and older.

But yeah, the C60 from the Celica could be used with this same method. Custom axles will still be needed though, and possibly some modification to the mounts.

LOL, me too. The other side could look as shiney with some industrial strength cleaner and a wire brush. :)

Just so i'm clear.. so if I wanted to use a C52 off a 98+ incld 03+, all I'd have to do is grab a bell housing off a A series C52 and swap the two? Anything else necessary?
    Good thing to know here..

Yes, first of all, taking the tranny apart is a delicate process. Second, you have to press out the differential bearing shims and use the ones from the newer C52 tranny. Third, you MUST measure the bearing preload with an accurate inch-pound torque wrench and make sure it's in spec.

It's not a unbolt, bolt and go process, which is why hazer00 sent it to me instead of doing it himself. :) But yeah, that's basically how you do it.

Yes, the tranny design is the same, but when you rebuild a tranny (which this is part of the rebuild process) you have to measure the diff preload and replace the shims if it isn't right. The shims come in various sized.

Also the C60 comes with the 2ZZGE, not the 20v... and I'm not sure what the 1ZZFE uses, if it's the C56 or what.

You sure? I thought it was called the C160? (Which never made any sense to me).

Nice work Doc! Now, how do you ship a tranny without it getting too expensive? FedEx UPS?? Also, isn't the 1ZZ tranny electronically controlled, or does that not matter?

This is one sweet hybrid tranny conversion. How much would you do for one.

    yeah, i'm sure it's a c60

shipping a C series isn't that bad.... they only weigh about ~70lbs or so...

now, shipping an E series..... UPS weighed mine at 144lbs!

Yeah UPS is shipping this one for $70, not too bad. This one weighed in at 82.5 lbs.

The labor is $100, then you have to find the part.

Now, the axles on the Celica C60 are different (the inner splines are larger), is this the same case with the Blacktop C60? (Everyone I've ever seen refer to the blacktop 6-speed on club4ag.com and mr2oc.com have called it the C160...)

LOL yeah, one time I had to ship an all-trac tranny, I had to split the transfer case and tranny and ship them seperately!

By the way, Greyhound will actually ship most large items for a pretty decent price. The only trouble for me is that the nearest Greyhound is like 2 hours away!

hmm.... i would need to look through my documentation of engine stuff CD to check the code... i was pretty sure it was C60.... but C160 does sound familiar.

I would assume, however, that the C60 and C160 share gearings, but probably have different differentials and/or bellhousings.... for the most part that's how the E series are (E51, E58, E58 LSD, E150, E150 LSD)
