Dr. Tweak, you are correct. 8th gen Corollas had side airbags as options.

Socccer moms need to be taken out of their SUVs. Does not matter if there are side airbags or not. If someone goes in 5500 lbs SUV to get some groceries and hits a 2600 lbs car at 31 mph, there is a very little chance anyone will survive in that little car no matter how strongly the little car is built (Jetta has one of the bet safety standards in the business). That is exactly the hidden message is in this test.

technically the force of impact between the 2 vehicles is the same whatever their mass/weight. it's just how well an suv can stand up to that force versus a small car.

No way man. If you are telling me that an object that weighs about 5500 lbs impacts a smaller mass of 2600 lbs with say, 200 ft lbs of pressure is the same as a 3000 lbs car impacting the 2600 lbs car with the same 200 ft lbs of pressure, I am not going to believe it. Besides, SUVs have a much higher hood line and they impact the top end of a lower vehicle first rather than the doorside in the case of a car with a lower center of gravity. The chances of serious head injuries and brain damage are God forbid much higher in an SUV and car accident. The car driver is at loss no matter how you look at it.

I agree.. "The test simulates the impact on a small car by a pickup truck or SUV." The caption under the picture says it all.

Another proof is that NHTSA rates the Corolla 4 stars side impact and 5 star front and back. The only difference is that they use normal sized objects.
