    clutch engagement point question

Does everyone just let out the clutch at a stop light when they take off, then once its engaged, they apply the gas?
i might be doing it wrong, i let the clutch out slowly and give it some gas, i let it catch at about 1200 rpm, sometimes higher on hills, and once it catches, i add more gas and let go of the clutch, while adding more gas, it's not bumpy. am i doing it wrong?
