"Check Engine" light on after supercharger install

After running the supercharger for about a week, the "Check Engine" light came on. What could cause that? All I have is the additional TRD muffler and the K&N drop filter. Maybe Toyota screwed up something. I have to call them and tell them about it.

If toyota installed it, then i would say take it back ASAP and have them run the computer diagnostics on it that will probably tell them whats wrong.

Didnt you take it to carson toyota? I bet they would deffinately help you, ive never been there but they sound like a very reputable dealer.

But i cant think what would cause the CEL, i know my intake makes it come on once in a while. But the SC shouldnt make it come on since it comes with another ECU. Unless the TRD ECU just adjusts the Air/fuel ratio, but dosnt tell the real ECU to get ready for some boost.

That could be one of the reasons. I will definitely take it back tomorrow first thing. The only thing I did recently was checking my air filter, that's it. I'm sure the box is on tight and no leaks. ECU's are too complicated. Thank goodness for the warranty.

how long have you had it for?? and what year is your rolla??

the best thing to do right now is either take it back to Toyota.. or unplug your battery.. and rest the ECU.. if the light come back on again.. than there is something really wrong going on..

my light went on because my supercharger killed my cat-converter.. after i changed it everything is fine..

Tro1086, how do you remedy the CEL when your intake causes it to trigger? Disconnect the battery cable for a minute?

It's an 03 Corolla and the check engine light came on after a few days, I think. I took it to the Toyota dealer and they said that there was a failure with the O2 sensor. They don't know if it was related to the supercharger or not. They have it on order now, so I should get a new one installed at no charge. After they reset the computer, the check engine light came on again after driving for half a day!!!

Maybe I need a new catalytic convertor, huh? I'll see what happens after they install the new O2 sensor. If it comes on again after that, then they have to run a deeper diagnostic.

Ya you can just disconnect the battery cable for a minute and that will reset the ECU. But it will most likely come back again. I did this about 10 times and it would keep comming back. So i just gave up and left it alone and the CEL went away on its own, and stayed off for a while, every once in a while it comes back on but it only seems to do that when I let the car idle for a long time. But then it goes back off again on its own.

Ide say just leave it alone and hopefully the car will get used to running with more air and turn the CEL off on its own. I gues thats kinda what my car did.

If the CEL never goes off after like a week or so I would say try and clean your MAF (air flow censor)

Ive never cleaned mine but if you search the forums theres some posts about how to clean it and what to use to clean in.

It's been a few days now since I got my car back from the dealer. It looks like they finally got the Check Engine light taken care of. Before, it would always come on like the same day. It was a repeated pattern for about a few weeks.

Toyota had 2 TRD Specialist come over to help the regular full time TRD technician at the dealer and came up with the solution. Aparently, the O2 sensor was reading a malfunction. But.....at the same time, there was an open circuit in the TRD ECU and wiring harness. Bottom line, the TRD ECU was not communicating with the stock ECU properly, which is why the O2 sensor keeps picking up abnormal readings and initiating the check engine light. After replacing the O2 sensor a few times, stock ECU, and cat-convertor, they finally resolved it by replacing the TRD ECU and harness.

WHY couldn't they have done that from the beginning like I suggested? Took them that long to finally figure it out? THey told me that Toyota and TRD are different division and needed TRD's approval for any warrantied part replacement to take place (as far as TRD parts go). SHeshhhhh.

I don't want to get my hopes up just yet as it has only been a few days. But if the light hasn't come on yet, maybe they did finally fix it!!! We'll see......

Thanks for the update. Good to hear a solution finally came up. Hopefully that'll fix the problem.
