    Chattering sound!??!

Today i hit the canyons a lil bit. On my way back my oil lights goes on/off everynow and then. So when i get home i put a lil more oil in the car. After a while i start to notice a chattering sound. I sounds exactly like a woodpecker...maybe a lil softer. It happends wen i floor it then release the gas pedal..it go's "tick tick tick tick". Or ill drive it normal and rite as it redlines and shifts gears(auto)..."tick tick tick tick". I dunno what the hell it is.

I had that problem a lil while ago... dunno if its the same but you could check the terminals on your cars "under strut bars".. (sorry dunno what they're actually called) but anyhow, i used to have the same ticking sound not so long ago.. i just changed one of the terminals that broke andit wuz fixed.

it could be possible that your internals are a lil messed up....if you drove the car hard with not enough oil in it, then that's a lotta stress on the internals...this happened to me at one point....i didn't check the oil for a couple weeks and still drove it pretty hard....i noticed the oil light comin on and filled it up....a couple days later, i heard a rattling noise during revs....didn't sound like normal engine clatter, either....well...drivin up to my dad's shop (auto mechanic), i downshifted and that's when the rod busted....real bad clattering....wouldn't stay running without givin it a lotta gas...

    anyway....somethin to think about.

you can find a used engine in a junk yard if you're just lookin to get back on the road....otherwise, it might be a good idea to do a long-awaited engine swap...<ahem> 4A-GZE!!! : o )

try and get someone to help you do it....labor on replacing an engine is quite a chunk of change....i got an engine for about $500 from a junk yard...it had 84000 miles on it....went into my 96 Rolla (sold it) that had 130000 miles on it....so...not bad...i helped my dad install it and didn't have to pay labor. (he's my dad, duh)

Hmm i have no idea what the would be. My best guess is a syncro is gone. Either way just to have some one diagnose your transmission is like 800 bucks.

can that be fixed or new engine...if it can be fixed i mit jus buy the big bore kit and redo my whole internals.

    if it cant:
Im looking at a celica gts front clip
    or
Ima buy a non-vvti engine...regrind the cams and big bore it. thats like 160 hp...i guess.

but for now im driving my pimp 1990 subaru legacy. Only good thing is that its 5spd..hehe

Damn man......that sucks. Sounds like the low oil level is what caused it for sure. But before you go and do any major repairs, you should check to see if anything in the engine compartment came loose also. That damn woodpecker was messing with my ride once and it turned out that my battery tie down bar was loose.

I doubt detonation. I've got chattering too, but I know what mine is. I've got worn connecting rod bearings....

My car makes a ticking sound, but it seems slightly different than the symptoms you guys are describing. My sound seems linked to the clutch somehow (literally). I can hear it coming from the engine compartment when I let the car run, but when I press the clutch, it goes away. I've been told it's the throwout bearing, but I really haven't had time to get it checked out. Anyone else have a similar problem?

mate, i don't know if its the same thing but, if your rattle sounds like metal on metal, and you have a vvti model, it usually means that your vvti isn't working, easy way to check is take your cambelt cover off, put some paint or twink on the rear cambelt disc, and rev it, if the disc advances then vvti is working if not its stuffed.

    No...
vvti is always on...if that were the case then id be ticking all the time. Also even if it was jamed the engine would be very sluggish.....its not.....What you are talking about is proably for a vtec engine.

More than likely i bent a valve. OR wore out a rod bearing and im probably on the verge of getting heavy rod knock.

Tomorrow im taking it in to toyota. I have a feeling they are gunna come up with some bullshit and void my warrenty. Then ill jus get a big bore kit and rebuilt the engine.

but if your oil light comes on pull over to a level area and stop your car. if something is really wrong you need to make sure your oil isn't taht low. that can cause hugh problems.

Nope. No solution yet. I really haven't had much time to check it out, but I'll post a thread about it when I do.

Hey, I think I found what makes the noise on my car.

I just opened the hood and listened to where the noise was coming from. it turns out it's coming from what looks like a hinge on the front of the transmission. I don't know the name of whatever part it is, but it looks like a large bolt covered by a rubber boot. The bolt looked loose, so pressed my wrench up against it and the noise stopped! The bolt was round and didn't look to have a phillips or flat head indentation, so I don't know how to tighten it.

I'll investigate more this afternoon and see if I can borrow my gf's digi cam.
