    Can someone explain this?

    16.000 @ 87.80 // 03 Corolla CE 5-spd \\ Motor Trend
    16.100 @ 87.50 // 03 Corolla S 5-spd \\ Motor Trend

Why is the corolla SPORT slower then the corolla ce?

my guess would be that the S is heavier then the CE with all the extra stuff like power windows and what not.

really? I thought that the S was faster I was shocked when I saw this. You really think the S is heavier, and that that made a difference?

yea, weight, just the options available on the s that arent on the ce..power and the kit, so theoretically the ce should be faster, if you look at corolla specs in a brochure or whatever, it lists the s manual heavier then the ce manual....by 22 pounds, and the small discrepancy in the times and speeds in those numbers is so slim that that 22 pounds COULD be the culprit, of course those could be from two diff test on two diff days with two diff drivers...but...ce owns

Yep, CE ownz j00. CE 5 spd is the fastest rolla in stock trim, till the XRS comes out.

S has things like power windows/locks, cruise control, alarm, bigger tires(gives slower acceleration, and i doubt they regeared the tranny between the CE and S, just recalbrated the spedo), and also the body kit. So ya the S is definately heavier then the CE so on paper atleast the CE will always be faster.

The greatest difference in performance is the shorter 185s of the CE. They will give it very slightly better acceleration. They are also a bit lighter than the 195s and that helps too. The 22 lbs overall is minimal, and the aerodynamics may play a very small part. And as others have said there are other variations in time of day, temperatures will also affect the results. A lot of us could lighten our cars much easier by eating fewer big macs

The S is just an appearance package. You guys haven't figured that out yet?

The ground effects and spoiler are just for show and are non-functional. They only add weight. The drivetrain, suspension, etc. is identical on all models.

The S would be a nudge faster than the CE in a track race with the aerodynamics from the kit and grip from the larger tire dimension.

Not really. The kit on the S is more for show than anything else. The car is heavy enough that aerodynamic lift is really not a factor until you get around top speed anyway. It certainly wouldn't be much help in autocross.

The tires might make a bit of a difference. The stock tires aren't very good at grip, though, no matter what the size.

Again, the S is only an appearance package. There's no real performance enhancements.

dont forget drivers shift differently if its driven by different drivers. and if it's the same driver, they dont always shift at exact spot.

My S has no different options than a CE. I have manual windows, etc., but the tire size on a CE is also smaller than on the S> This, in effect, gives the CE a lower axle ratio than the S, and this gives beter accceleration. Most of us install larger wheels and tires after we buy, so this effect is canceled out anyway.
Add this to the difference in weight, and you do have a difference.

Alright CE owners you guyz can have that milisecond differece while we S owners can lower and raise our windows going at 80 miles on the highway. Close all four doors with the touch of a bottom and look good with the under body kit and fog lights that so many of you want to buy.

    NO HEART FEELINGS. :D

ha, well i can lower all my windows while going 80 down the highway. The car is so small you can reach all the windows from the drivers seat. But it would be nice to have power locks. But i dont have people in my car too often anyway so the only lock i usually have to worry about is the drivers side. The only thing i would really want from the S is the fog lights, and maybe the black interior, but i got the grey so its not as bad as the 'pebble beige' atleast. IMO, the S kit dose look nice, but if you plan to get an aftermarket later on then its just a waste of money, might as well just save the money that you would of spend on the S kit and get an aftermarket.

Oh well, ill always love my CE, cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, cheaper to register, and probably less likely to get stolen. Plus, everyone has an S, so a CE is almost cooler. And if anyone ever says the car sucks or anything, just tell them to read the emblem on the back, Cheap Edition.

the ear;y production "S" had a slighlty stiffer suspension than the CE and Le. I think they dropped that pretty fast. If you dont beleive me ask FC drifter he rode in my car and noticed it being stiffer right away. And I had NO suspension mods done at all.

Actually they even had some commercials saying how much stiffer the new corolla was, and in small print on the bottom it said "S model only"

I was told that everything mechanical between all Corollas was equal, the brakes, suspension, transmission, engine....etc. Hence why I bought the CE, why pay for a S model to just get a bodykit, leather steering wheel, rims...etc.

I rode in stinky's S and it was stiffer, don't know if it is the effect of the wider/lower sidewall tire, but it seemed to not lean during corners like my CE does.

I like the CE, I have no side moldings, no badging and it gives it a great clean look that no one would give a second glance to, but yet still looks good. Perfect daily driver. My buzzsaw RX-7 gets enough looks for me :)

Guys--- the "S" is just an appearance package. There is absolutely no difference between the CE, LE and S as far as engine/drivetrain go.

Hell you can have TWO Identical Corolla S and have DIFFERENT results... this is attributed to MANY things-- like how the driver shifts, weather condition, traction, elevation, etc.

no actually the first release of the S model did have a firmer suspension.........i read that in the new nopi street magazine, and confirmed it w/ the parts guy at my dealership.

which is awesome cuz my I got my S February 11, 2002 right after they came out.

Anyone else seen the Feb/Mar issue of Nopi street? It's got an article on the serenity sound corolla......we've got more heavily modded corollas on this board than the serenity corolla.

So when did the corolla S stop having the stiffer suspension, or does it still have it?
