Can I run my CAI with my S/C?

I've read that several of you guys with S/C are running it with your CAI. Would I need to have the engine re-tuned to accommodate the air flow difference, and if so, would it pass smog? I know I won't have to worry about it for the next few years, but I'd hate to get rid of my CAI.

Assuming you live in CA, you must have a CARB sticker on your CAI to pass emissions. Otherwise the car MUST pass emissions in it's current modified form. Just about every manufacturer has CARB approved CAI's. If yours doesn't, I would call the manufacturer. As for the ECU adjusting to the CAI's "increased" airflow, you would have to disconnect the MAF sensor from the ECU during the install. After assembly of the CAI and re-installation, it's always wise to let the car idle for about 5 minutes to let the ECU readjust for the CAI. No other adjustments needed - assuming you follow that rule.

Also assuming that you're speaking of the TRD S/C, I'm sure that it's either CARB approved or TRD has applied for CARB exemptions.

Absolutely. If you have TRD s/c plus TRD intake, they are all CARB exempt in California. I checked on that and Toyota said there should be no problem passing emissions testing. I have a K&N Typhoon system and it is CARB Exempt also and pass everything too. As far as setting up the intake to the s/c, I'm still waiting for a reply on that. I assume you could though without much hassle.

Just got an answer. You cannot install a CAI with the TRD s/c. If you do, it will void the warranty completely. You can if you choose to, but your warranty is dead.

RUn 91 octane or higher only. Makre sure gas is not low, run colder spark plugs, and lower thermostat for greater performance. I am reading off of the TRD instructions for maintaining vehicle with s/c.

OK well this has been posted around a few times already but like he said make sure you run a high octane gas or you will have problems. It will fit fine though, to my knowledge your injen wont fit though. Have you tried yet? I had the AEM intake and it didnt and it resembles the Injen more so than the TRD intake. What year is your car? If it is 03 get the unichip and you will be great!

Thanks so far for the tips

I have a 2003 manual rolla. The CAI was made by Injen, which as I believe for now does not have a CARB certificate, which won't be a problem until 2007 when I have to smog it. The TRD S/C is CARB certified. I went to ca.gov site for the aftermarket parts and it is already on their list.

Not to slam you guys with questions, but since it does void the warranty, does is break the S/C, engine, or something else that makes it void while running with the CAI?

Does the unichip make the proper adjustments to make the S/C compatible with a CAI?

Either way you guys are and have been a great help to my modification process.

One other thing about the injen intake

I haven't tried to install it again, but it was a flush mount to the throttle body. It looks like it wold fit again, unless the S/C moved the throttle body placement and I have not been able to eyeball it.
