Can i put an XRS Shifter in an 05 S?

I know that the XRS and S have different trannies....but that doesn't mean that the shifter has to be different....it's just a lever that fits into a slot. considering it's the same car, the mount points might be the same. does anyone have any info on whether or not this might be work? i would imagine that it would be a much more elegant way of getting a shorter and more precise throw without all the problems of an aftermarket product.

I think what he meant is the short shifter from the XRS, not just the knob and the boot.

have u ever seen what a shifter looks like under the boot? there are 2 rods that control the tranny VIA the vertical and horizantal movements.

what exactally is differnt about the XRS and S shifters?

Just get an aftermarket if you want a shorter or quicker throw, if ur goin for looks, just get a new knob and boot off Ebay

They're the same lever....what's the point????
I took about 2 inches off my lever with a hacksaw, then installed a nice black chrome Ractive knob. The difference is phenomenol.

I don't particularly want a shifter that is shorter; that can look odd as well as place the shiftknob in an uncomfortable place. i would like a shorter, more precise throw which can easily be accomplished by moving the lever fulcrum higher, as is done in the XRS compared to the S as well as in other aftermarket shifters sold for many cars. This is why i am asking about the XRS shifter. it is still the same height, yet is has a desirable throw and feeling. Aftermarket shifters, or replacement shift rods tend to rattle, whine, make odd noises in my experience. This is what makes the stock XRS shifter preferable IMO.

Every car is unique, but my experience with other cars is that the shifter is merely a lever which fits into a slot coming from the transmission. moving the shifter moves the slot in the x and y axes, causeing the gear shift. if the slot is in the same position for the S and XRS, and they have the same mounting points for the shifters, then they should be interchangeable, right??

The question is....who has seen an XRS shifter by itself? we could compare one to an S shifter if we could get some pictures. I think this would probably be a cheap, popular mod if we could figure it out.

The XRS shifter is great. Very ergonomic and great grip. Looks very nice with all the leather and chrome work. Unfortunately, you would be better off picking up a TRD shifter than the XRS since the XRS gears pattern is different from the Corolla S. The S reverse gear is placed beside the fourth whereas the XRS reverse is more like the European sport sedans where it is placed to the extreme left of 1st. The XRS gears are much closer to each other than the Corolla S gears as well.

    Faisal,
it seems you've never taken out a shifter. the gear pattern and the spacing of the gears as your refer to them are irrelevant. it's difficult to explain without pictures....but those things are inside the transmission...they have nothing really to do with the shifter. the shifter really is just a rod that rotates around a pivot point.

I know what you are talking about and I know how to change a shifter. What I meant to say was that the gear pattern is not the same in the 5 speed S and 6 speed XRS so the shifter will be giving inaccurate info about the shift pattern especially about the sixth gear and different positioning of the reverse gear. I guess you do not care about what the shifter says about the patterns.

of course not. i would know where reverse is in my car. besides, a new shift knob would address your concerns. I could put the stock shift knob on there and it would display the same pattern.

No one has answered my question yet. does anyone have any pictures of an XRS shifter so we can see if the bolts are in the same location?

the XRS needs 6 gears because it needs to stay as close to the point of lift as possible. The S has no real need for a 6th gear IMO

    polo,
no one has mentioned anything about needing a 6th gear or not. this thread is about the SHIFTER! will the shifter from the XRS fit in the S? i don't see why not, unless the slot in the tranny is in a different place, or if the mounting points are different. HAS ANYONE SEEN AN XRS SHIFTER OUT OF THE CAR?
