can I put a vvti 4-cyl camry engine in this?

This might be a stupid question but I am just curious if it is at all possible to put the 4 cyl vvti camry engine from the 02+ camry's into either a 91+ earlier camry or celica since they have the 2.2 liter engine and they both look about the same size. Im just curious is all.

It would fit dimension wise I believe, I dont think too many things would line so there would be so fabrication to do, and the wiring would probably be interesting since a 91 should be OBD0 and the new camr is OBD2... so possible? = yes, easy? = not sure, but leaning towards no...

It would most likely work. you'd just need a little custom fabrication for engine mounts, exhaust manifolds (maybe), etc. I'd swap the newer vvt-i engine and computer into the older car.

If your thinking of doing that its gonna cost you alot. I'm already spending about 4 grand on my car with a new motor that is ported and polished and a 5spd conversion with racing flywheel and clutch etc.

thats what i spent in total with all my engines, with the exception of the last one i spent about 3K for that one alone. get the electronics setup and you should be fine.

with that in mind.... what is the best engine (plug and play) that would be best suited for the 91 camry? Using same 5-speed transmission, wiring, etc. 4-cyl.... reason Im asking all of this is because my moms 91 camry is starting to take a dive so to speak and I was thinking of taking it as a project car so she could buy a new one.

Well there is no such thing as "plug and play" really, unless you swap in the same engine. However, you could swap over a 5-speed V6, as long as you got the whole harness and it was from the same year, it would be plug and play (I just thought of that).

But if you want a real performance engine, then James is right on, the 3SGTE will bolt to that tranny and would be a pretty straightforward swap.

and that really is worth the time and money so if you're looking to spend it you might as well spend it something good.
