    BOV's Question

Ok me and my friend are arguing about BOVs on superchargers... I said it doesnt need it... he says he heard it, i told him it was a turbo. So can somebody verify?

Superchargers are belt-driven and run at a constant pressure, afaik..so no BOV.

    I'm no expert, though. =)

the superchargers that dont need/have BOVs typically have the throttlebody placed before the supercharger unit, thus there is no way for air to back up into the blades. i.e. roots/twinscrew/whipple that mount directly to, or replace, the intake manifold..... similar to the trd one for the corollas

a centrifugal is basically a belt driven turbo and mounts before the throttle body, therefore when the throttle is closed the pressurized air in the charge pipes needs somewhere to go........ BOV

I believe turbo4age said it best,
but i was thinking since the engine revs slows down after the throttle is close, there may be no need for a bov... but then again same could be said for turbos so tuche

it depends on the supercharger, it is quite possible to put a bov on a centrafuge type since there are charge pipes leading up to the throttle body, and it would "blow off" when you let go of the throttle at high RPM's.. but rather or not they're needed is questionable

its only possible in a belt driven one, that has thorttle pipes...
its impossible to have one at a supercharger that mounts on the intake manifold like the 4agze.

even so BOV's are not technically required even on turbocharged vehicles. whether or not compressor surge is bad is debatable.

BOV's on superchargers are a possibility, and may be needed in some cases... for example in a twincharged situation, when the turbo spools, it opens the BOV, to reduce backlash and mechanical drag, but these are usually only required on centrifugal types..
