    bad day....

ok..... my Supercharger just killed my Cat Converter today...

do you guys think i should take it back to Toyota and have them install another Cat?
(toyota might not warrenty it because it was installed by other company)

or should i take it to a muffler shop and do a customer pipe and high flow cat?
(alot of muffler shop won't do it because it's a new car)..

    what should i do..?

If you can't get a cat from Toyota, then i'd opt for the high-flow cat route. What's the worst that could happen? Toyota would say no.

Where would you get the high flow cat? You'd need one that can fit. It would have to be OBD-II compliant??? And it would have to be good enough to meet California's SUPER stringent emissions requirements. There's a reason why CARB registered products are always 50-state legal: CA has the highest emissions standards.

Where do you live? Many states require exhaust sniffing to get your inspection sticker.

No he's got an 04 (TRD says it has different fuel mappings than the 03, which is why the 1ZZ supercharger is only to be used on 03 vehicles) and it was pinging like crazy the very day he got it. Super high octane racing fuel solved that problem for about a week, but after he went back to regular 91 octane gas (that's the highest we get in CA), it started pinging again (like cancer for the engine). So he got a Unichip, which I helped him install. Unichip had assured us that it would work in a 2004 (in actuality, they had only tested with an N/A 2004 Corolla, not a supercharged 04), but it ended up pinging even worse because the fuel mappings developed by Unichip were for the 2003. So a week after installing the Unichip, he brought it to a tuning shop that Unichip told us to go to and they dyno-ed it for 2 days, tweaking and adjusting the fuel timings. Everything seemed fine after that. He even drove over 1000 miles on it in one week, down to LA and out to Las Vegas and back again.

That was about 1 week ago. Just 2 nights ago he complained about that something seemed to have gotten caught between the catalytic converter and the "heat shield" and was rattling. At first we thought it was just a rock that got stuck up there. I didn't get a chance to hear the sound, but I really didn't think anything of it. But today it got considerably worse. His cat sounds like a rattling tin can. It's dead.

It either died because of the 3 weeks of pinging supercharger with messed up fuel timings, or it died because of finalized fuel timings that were set up. Either way, Toyota does not sell just the catalytic converter. The only way to obtain an OEM piece is to get the ENTIRE exhaust, from manifold-back (minus the muffler). The retail is $988. My best price that I can get it for him is $740. It is a sad day indeed.

LESSON LEARNED: If TRD says it won't work, then don't do it.

Interesting, so the 2004's have leaner fuel map than the 2003. Could be Toyota's answer in solving the fuel economy issue I suppose.

I say go custom, youll probably get performance out of it and save some money too. I gues im luckey that i live in wyoming. I dont have to worry about emissions at all, its nice. We dont even have vehicle inspections or anything.
