Anyone here have Cables (winter driving)

Yesterday I was out driving my Tacoma 2WD pickup on black ice and it didn't do so well. I could not exceed 25mph and I was all over the road. I don't want to buy studded tires because they cost a bundle but I would like an alternative. I saw a few cars driving around with cables on their tires and they were going a hell of a lot faster than me. Does anyone here have experience with cables on 2WD trucks? If so let me know what the pros and cons are. If they will give me back my mobility I'll go pick up a set. But if the cops are going to pull me over for driving around with cables when only ice is on the ground I don't want to go that route either. Also how harsh is the ride with cables on the vehical and can they be placed on both the front and back tires? All the cars I witnessed driving with them only had them on the back tires.

I would imagine the ride would be terrible - however, I haven't used them before.

Have you weighted the bed yet? Put some tube sand or something back there - it should help you out significantly (not necessarily on ice, but overall winter driving). Are you running snow tires, or just all seasons?

I'm running all seasons and I did toss about 300lb of cinderblocks in the back.

300 lbs thats all, I have run up too 600 lbs in my 4x4 truck when I had it. Cinderblocks and packed snow FTW.

Never used chains thou, but from what I have heard from my mail lady is that the ride is pretty rough

coming over snoqualmie pass I couldn't believe how many people don't know how to use chains. people were doing 65mph with chains on. There's a reason the say to go no faster than 35mph with them. chains work great for snow and ice under 35 though, I use my chains regularly on the rolla to get over the pass. (mind you I have low profile ones so they don't hit my body kit)

I have summer tires so I can't even handle as much snow as oem firestones.

Chains are worthless on black ice.
