A college buddy was a big bird person - he also have a orange tabby cat for "exercise" purposes. Had a Yellow-naped Amazon parrot male - pretty cool bird, very clear vocals, kind of funky bird with a little attitude. But come breeding season, the parrot would chase around his cat and try and mount it. Pretty funny. Also had a couple of Cockatiels.

If your looking at the Cockatiels - those are a great choice, one of the most popluar pet birds in the world, lots of literature and how-to on them. Only thing you have to watch for is weight gain (they'll eat all kinds of stuff and get pretty fat quickly - hence his cat "exercise" program) and they're very sensitive to hairproducts (put them on your shoulder and they'll try to eat your hair - hence earlier reference to where they will eat all kinds of stuff). They are pretty good at vocals, easy to take care of, don't get all pissed and moody off if you leave for a week and come back, pretty affectionate (good around other pets and little kids), and better price point compared to bigger birds (ie, if someone has a n allergy to the bird - you're out a few hunderd vs a grand or two for the bigger birds).

I had birds my whole life growing up and they are loud as hell, bite the crap out of you when you least expect it and they like to poop all over there cage so it needs to be cleaned atleast once a week. So I really am not a big bird nut :D We did have a parrot growing up that could talk pretty good and it would lay on its back in your hand but it was louder then the rest and woke you up in a panic at 3am every morning because it got startled by something.

    :)
What kind of parrot was it? The cockatiels arent very loud/obnoxious birds, so at least they have that going for them.

We had an Umbrella Cockatoo. It was Loud as a freaking Fog Horn. We actually had 2 because we raised one and hand fed it and then my mom gave it away then another one found its way to us because my mom thinks she is doctor dolittle.

Yeah they talk up a storm but it takes a long time to teach them. But they are very clear. Mine however liked to chase you around when it got on the floor and it did this thing we used to call the "Thunder Chicken" where it would spread its wings way the heck out and cock its head and start making this ear piercing noise that scared the crap out of our cats :D The plus side is you can let them roam the house because the cats are scared to death of them.

Yeah, seems the cokatoos are one of the harder birds to raise....theyre moody, aggressive, loud, and stubborn.

My neighbor had a cockatoo, but he hated everyone except his owner.
