Engine another question, coolant bypass is it safe?

    depends where u live.....if u live in a cold climate i would keep it.

    I did the coolant bypass thing and it doesn't boost hp. I don't think it's worth it.

    yea i cant find a reason to do it other to have a place to tap into coolant to a turbo

    another question, coolant bypass is it safe?

    my friend was telling me about a DIY mod to my car called a coolant bypass. is this a safe mod to do. i know i could get a couple of ponys out of it... but is it worth it?

    what are the risks?

    It's an easy mod and is worth it... I've had no problems with it and an Injen CAI, down to -50ºF. Every little bit helps.

    If engine didnt need coolant, the car manufacturers would stop putting the system in your car....its not worth 2hp to strain your engine.

    I'd be suprised if that mod added even a single HP to our cars. The reason some people go with the coolant bypass mod are they make assumptions involved with engine operation, ie. cooler is better. Problem is, that only applies to certain cases - in this case - it doesn't apply.

    Coolant bypass is primarily used to protect against icing - can happen in almost any weather, any temperature - just needs specific conditions for temperature and moisture to be meet.

    As for power loss to the added heat - maybe lucky if you lose 0.1% to 0.2% of total engine HP. That means if you pull 130 HP at the crank - you would lose 0.26 HP with the 0.2% loss. Not worth doing the mode.

    e_andree is absolutely right - if the car didn't need it, the manufacturer wouldn't have put it in. It is all in the physics. Apply Nusselt Number, Reynolds Number, Newton's laws, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics - you'll see that it doesn't work.

    I've experienced no negative effects at any temperature, ranging from minus 50 degrees (below zero) Fahrenheit with snow storms , all the way up to +90 degrees...

    There is no added 'strain'. No icing occurs down to -50*F. A colder throttle body allows for cooler, denser intake air, resulting in more power.

    what about in temperatures below 20 degrees, outside, would this have any negitive effect?

    Yeah, GMC's cold weather testing facility is right here in Kapuskasing, and they actually tested our 1ZZ-FE in their Pontiac Vibe... Toyota's cold weather test site is only 100 miles away, in Timmins Ontario.

    in parts of northern canada it'll hit -60C with windchill factor

    My personal experience which has been verified by others: the power your car has on hot days in the first 30 minutes of driving doesn't disappear. The engine is stronger for as long as the engine is running. We all know manufacturers make a certain number of concessions in the interest of comfort and driveability which rob power. The coolant flowing through the TB is ONLY for winter months. It serves absolutely no purpose in temps above freezing and only hurts power. And ya know - we have proof that the TB doesn't ice over even in -50ºF, so why not remove it?

    In sub-zero weather, my front gille is sealed up with plastic bag which helps a bit, although my Injen CAI's air filter did get partly plugged-up with snow at times last winter...It only caused some loss in air flow and power. I have now sealed off the large opening between splash guard and bumper frame (about 6" by 8") just by the CAI's air filter, keeping it clear of snow and splashings.
    On one occasion when it was about minus 20*F out, I attempted to drive around a residential main water flood, and broke through 2" of ice into over a foot deep of water leaning in on driver's side in a slight ditch, then barely managed to free myself, sputtering. The TB did then start sticking open, and I promptly drove it in heated garage to dry MAF sensor, TB and air filter.

    icing can occur @ different temps. for example. i live in phoenix...a little backround info for phoenix....it hasnt snowed here in a bajilion years....in the summer when its 102 it's a nice day. theres been ice on my car.

    haha wow i just read my post and im slapping myself. that makes no sense! 102 is summer not winter....and ya it can ice when it isnt 32 degrees (just not 102) im referring to 40 degree mornings. 32 degrees f. is the freezing point at a specific altitude...im guessing sea-level.
