you're supposed to check your belts every so often, soo...i'm guessing most people replace it before it starts or when it starts squealing.

    Alternator Belt

Whenever I turned the steering wheel all the way left or right (usually done only when pulling out of parking spaces) there would be this loud screeching noise, also at idle with the A/C on the car would sound sickly. After about a day of this I knew something was up so I pulled her in the garage and popped the hood. Turns out the belt on the alternator had gone to hell. It was real birttle, and was in two pieces, lol. I went down to autozone and got a new one and my dad and I popped her on. It was a little tough to get it on (as pretty much all new belts are) but we got it on. The most interesting part of the install was; however, this huge black beetle attacking us. Now the car purrs like a kitten again. Who else has had this prob?

it should have been very easy to get on if it's the alt belt... you need to loosen the top bolt, slide the alt forward, slide the belt on (shouldn't be difficult at all... there should be more than enough slack to get it on) then slide the alt back (i would suggest using a prybar to hold it back so there's good tension in the belt, otherwise it'll squeel when it gets cold out) then retighten the top alt bolt....
