    airbox temperatures...

I installed a digital thermometer into the airbox on my '03 Corolla. The airbox is not modified, except I've removed the plastic "snorkel".

Ambient temp today was 49ºF. While cruising, the airbox temp was about 1-2ºF higher. However, I let the car idle to see how high the airbox temp would go. At the highest, it registered 91ºF, and that was after 15 minutes of idling and the radiator fan turning on twice. After driving, it took about 5 minutes to come back down to around 55ºF. The thermometer is mounted on the INSIDE of the airbox. I'm going to install my SRI and see what kind of temps I see with that.

The "snorkel" is just what I call it - I don't really know the proper name for it.

If you look at your airbox, on one end is the air tube that connects to the throttle body. The other end, on the lower side of the airbox is a plastic air tube that actually runs along side the fender, under the fusebox and beside the battery and actually ends just above the left (driver side) headlight. It's the manufacturer's version of a cold air intake - it also reduces intake noise.

If you take the tube out, you'll see that it actually bottlenecks down to like 1 3/4" diameter - which to me, seems very restrictive. I just removed it. It makes the intake sound a little better (i.e., it's audible instead of completely silent). In effect, removing it kind of makes it a quasi-SRI...sort of...

It kind of snaps into the airbox, but it is held on by 1 bolt and 1 plastic snap. The snap is easy to see - it's just beside where the tube ends and is easily visible. The bolt is kind of beneath the fusebox and battery. Sooo...you probably have to remove the battery to get it out...I dunno...I did it when I was removing my CAI, which required removing the battery anyhow.

I was wondering if you had tested the temperature on the sri yet?
