Adjusted Market Value? Dealer wanted $500 over msrp (long)

Hey guys, I am new here, but very familar with Toyota. My parents have a 92 Corolla with 275k miles (bought it new) & 99 Camry. They love them both and I don't think they will ever part with the 92 Corolla. Runs great!! So now that I need a new car, I knew I wanted a corolla and I want the LE. Only option I prefer is 6 disk JBL system. And I want blue!

I went into a dealer tonight in Fort Pierce, FL, saw the car I wanted and took it for a test drive. I knew I would love it. It had JBL system, 15" wheels, floor mats and I think that is it. They had the msrp of about $17,756.00. Then next to the MSRP sticker they had another sticker that said "Adjusted Market Value" and it said $19,100. My dad and I laughed at that and said we won't even look at that. It had nothing to do with Toyota and was stuck there by the dealer. When we asked what it was, they said some junk about it being adjusted to the area. My dad and I raised an eyebrow since we never heard of that on a Corolla. Maybe an M3 but not a corolla. They had about 10-15 on the lot. We went inside and the salesman (who was very nice and knew a lot) started asking us what was our offer. My dad and I told him 16k (low, but not absurd. I would go as high as 16,750). The guy said that probably wouldn't fly. We told him to get us a counter as we were ready to buy the car tonight. He left and the TO came back. The TO said he couldn't do 16k because he owned the car for a lot more. I didn't believe that at all. I would guess he owned the car for around 15500. If he countered 17, we would go back and forth (you guys know how it is). He "COUNTERS" with $18,000+400TTT=18400 and he refused to come down. I told him he was crazy and that was higher than MSRP, and there was no way in hell I was paying above MSRP for a corolla. He refused...we got up and walked. He let us go out the door. I came home without a Corolla but I will go down to WPB and go to a dealer down there.

Now my question for you guys, was I crazy asking 16k and willing to go to 16750? Options were just JBL, wheels and floor mats. It wasn't loaded. It didn't have side airbags or ABS. I thought 18k was absurd! Has anyone else dealt with the Adjusted market value? I hope that is not the norm. I don't want to pay 18k for a corolla. Excellent little car, but not work $18k. I am going to do some research tomorrow (friday) and head to WPB with a bit more information. If they offered 1k less than MSRP I would have bought it. I loved the car. But wasn't going to pay more than MSRP. Any comments? Suggestions? I won't ask you guys what you have paid for yours since I am sure its been talked about before. i will search.

I emailed Toyota Customer Service about this incident. I don't think a dealer should be able to just tack "Adjusted market value" onto the car and claim that is MSRP. If that is MSRP why should toyota even post thiers then?

A bit about me...I'm a moderator over on thegalantcenter.net and have been a member for 3+ years. I love it over there. I owned a 98 Mitsubishi Galant ES since Nov 00. I sold it yesterday to my brother. Now I am new car shopping. I dont want a Mistu as the resale value is horrible and the paint was gone on most of the car. Toyota= great cars. I will hopefully be a "real" member of this club on Saturday.

Thank you for reading this. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated. 8)

Thanks. I figued I would pay 1k under MSRP, not 500 over it! I will definetly go to another dealer, probably a higher volume.

i just realized it could be because the 05 models are just being released......but still i bought my 03 2 weeks after they were released. You'll definitely end up paying under sticker, it's a corolla not an STi.

Exactly my point. 05s are great cause its just released, but its still a Corolla. If the car was high in demand and low in supply, I understand, your going to pay more. Thanks for the response.

I did some research on my S before I went to the dealer. I think invoice pricing was at about $14,500 ? Something like that... I did a couple of emails since I'm mad lazy and got an offer for $15,200 after stating I knew the invoice pricing. Then I went to Longo (largest dealer in the world), and they were offering me $16K which I laughed. I finally had to show the manager an offer of 15,2 and he said god, why'd you put me through all this trouble (he was feeling pretty stupid and pissed after that lol), and offered me $14,800. not too shabby. But then I heard some of the pricing some guys got here and was shocked (a lot lower).

i got mine for 14,700 from longo, maybe they might have been more forgiving, considering this was the second toyota in less then a month.

A good place to start is CarsDirect. They will show you how much is the invoice (the true invoice, unlike KBB or Edmunds). They sell 2005 Corolla LE only at $150 above the invoice, which is more than one thousand dollars off MSRP.

The best way to buy a new car today is to NOT to go down to the dealership, unless you need to test drive the car and find out what color looks better.

Go on to BuyToyota, and e-mail all the dealers near you. Tell them exactly what you want and how much you are willing to pay (say $100 above the invoice). Negotiate through e-mail is a lot less stressful. The next preferred way is faxing. The last is telephoning, but never go in person until a deal is ironed out.

If no one would beat or match CarsDirect's price, then just buy it from CarsDirect. Why pay more?

Thanks guys for the comments. I just never heard of "Adjusted Market Value" which is BS and just a reason to up the price. Now that I've seen you guys getting prices in the 14s, I should definetly be able to get LE in the 16s. I am going to print info out from Edmunds.com and bring it with me on Saturday.

Thank you & great club you guys have here.

i bought my 03 S with power windows. locks. the 6 speaker stereo, sunroof, rims, spoiler and some other junk. and got it for 16K out the door. with extended warranty. some dealers dont deal so just find one that does. just because its a toyota doesnt mean you need to pay full price. its not a ford that gives them away but still not a lexus either. i would try to stick to the 16.5 thats a fair deal

I got my 04 S with the power package, sport plus (wheels, spoiler), moonroof, weather package (rear heat and heavy duty rear defrost) for $14,500 + tax, tags... also got it at 1.9% financing. :D

If your dealer has a website, check for "Internet Specials." That's how I found mine. Sticker on the car was $17,800 btw.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

Today I actually stopped by the Mazda dealer and ended up getting a good price on a new Mazda 3i. Pretty good options and I bought it. Thank you for all your help. I will check back in occasionally here. You all have great cars and I will NEVER talk bad about Toyota. They are some of the best cars the market. Enjoy your car.

    Happy 4th everyone

My wife worked a Toyota in South Carolina as salesperson. At the point she found out employees could purchase at $150 over invoice. At that point we bought my Tacoma for about 16K, while sticker price \was about 18,500. When we move to Seattle, my wife bought her CE at the same deal. And the when, I traded my Tacoma in for an LE, I got the same deal. Sticker price was $17,400, I paid about 15,500. Most dealers will go for that deal, just to move a unit. So when you, go to buy, ask to see the invoice and go from there,

A couple months ago I was in Florida and I went to a couple dealers to test drive cars for the hell of it. I have been to many dealers including about 6 Toyota ones and when I went to this one in Florida I saw the "Adjusted Market Value" on every car. I was like what the hell is that. I have never seen that before. When I asked the salesman he told me not to pay any attention to it. Mabye its a Florida/Toyota thing?
