    98 engine starter replacement - $380?

    hey guys,
i dont know too much about cars, wondering if someone could help me out.
my 98 corolla has 71k miles on it, family friend who is a mechanic said he could cut us a deal and replace the starter since it was having trouble starting (turning the key at first gave a click, but if i waited 15 more seconds and turned the ignition again it would turn over and start)

he said this was a common symptom of failing starters. he replaced it for us at:
$250~ish for brand new OEM starter
    $130~ish for labor

i was wondering, even thoguh he's a family friend and all...
is $380 total fair? is it fair for me to give him that much?
or am i not being fair and giving him too little?

    thanks

    that is a little much.
For my started a place here wanted 350CDN for parts, return core, and labour.
I got it on discount for 200CDN, then got back whatever the core was... (new, not rebuilt), installed it myself, and called it a day, saving $150CDN ... for beer money :)

tht labour is way too much
it shouldnt take more than 10-20 minutes to install, which means about $50 max, depending on how the shop works for their time and what the hourly labour rate is

Dood, that is a hella lot of money to replace a starter. Mine went out at 80K and I paid only $130 new with the core exchange (I got like $60 back after the exchange so it was really like $70) and a friend of my dad's installed it for only 50 bucks man and he did it in like 10 minutes... they're charging u too much man, for that kinda money u can almost buy a motor man lol

    damn, thanks.

he did it in his own garage at home, since he lives like less than a mile away.
took him several hours, cause he drove off with my car thtere and dropped it back off at my house.

i guess i should maybe check out the rest of my car to see if he did anything funny...:/

damn dude you could get it done at toyota for less than that. I think when the starter died on my 99 (around the same mileage) I paid toyota about $250 for parts and labor.

And you could do it yourself for less than $150 probably.

ya i thought mine was gonna be covered by the extended warranty. i told em to do the work and then got stuck with the bill cuz the extended only covered vital engine parts. I fail to see how the starter isn't a vital part but o well i got shafted.

But over $300 is highway robbery

There is so much room in the engine bay not to intimidated by.
We believe in you and your abilities to wrench on your own car.
    1) Do you consider yourself not mechanicly incline?
    2) Are you a good reader?
If your not the the first option then the second will get you though it.
Just take your time and ask alot of questions from this board and alike, and you should be fine.
    Believe in yourself man.
