    87 Supra?

My next door neighbor who is a mechanic and has his own shop owns a white 87 Supra. The only thing is that it's an automatic. the engine is pretty much in mint condition. there are small rust spots here and there but not noticeable at all. As a mechanic, he knows how to upkeep it very well and has even upgraded engine internals. he claims his engine can go 180mph. he's looking to sell it for $6500. what do you guys think?

actually i forgot if it was an '87. gotta verify.

the mile counter says its about 125xxx but the engine has been rebuilt. he has swapped it with a longer mileage engine in better condition and has changed the internals on it. the transmission is fine. i drove it and there are no jolts or long delays, etc. it's n/a.

    I wouldn't pay 6500 for a 20 yr old car.

Do you trust that the guy did all the required work when rebuilding the 7M? Is it turbo? The 7M is notorious for BHG's and rodknock if you didn't already know that. So unless you really trust that this guy correctly machined the new head to match the block perfectly, and properly torqued down a new headgasket with ARP studs I'd pass on it.

Hell I've seen far too many rebuilt "*Mint condition" 7Ms develop rod knock or blow their HG's soon after rebuild to really want to keep that motor in the car anyway.

You say it has rust but isn't noticable? Have you checked EVERYTHING including the entire subframe? Its a 20 year old car and if theres a little rust you saw there could be much much more.

I will agree with gotar...I am a victim of both of those...luckily my rod knock isn't due to a bent rod..it's due to a spun rod bearing...bhg also occured...but that is fixed now...but as for the motor...it's gone.. :(

honestly...$6500 for an 87 non-turbo with rust in unnoticable spots..dude...not worth it...if the motor was rebuilt with upgraded internals that can handle a ridiculous amount of horsepower...it's not worth it..I paid $3800 for my turbo with 100k and it ran great for about 2 years...even after upgrading the turbo, intercooler, and increasing the boost to 14.5 from the stock 6.8....I'd look around a little more...
