    2ZZGE Swap: An Easier Option

Turns out that the stock 1ZZ 5-speed will mate up to the 2ZZGE without any issues.

That means you could do the swap with NO custom mounts, NO custom axles, and all you really need to do is the typical swap wiring...

This swap is a lot more feasible done like this!

I'm doing the wiring harness for this guy who did the swap into a '98, and I was like "What? How did you get around this problem and that problem blah blah blah" and he's like "Oh, I just used the stock 5-speed, it bolted right up!"

So the '98 is for sure, I imagine the newer ones fit as well, though if you have the newer body style the engine mounts and axles are not a problem so you might as well get the 6-speed. This applies more to '98-'00.

im am really curious as how the tranny will hold up to the high rpms. think it might give him problems down the road. but if it does work that is awesome.

Thats what I was wondering... does that mean its a direct bolt up the other way around? Is Brian going to be in the hunt for a 6-speed in his S in the near future?

then it does mean it should be a direct swap the other way around too (maybe not mounts, but the 6 speed should bolt to the 1zz)...

but, the 5 speed would be slower than the 6 speed no?

The engine would be a direct swap. There is really only one mount on the engine and that one bolts right up. The other three attach to the tranny.

So, yes the 6-speed would bolt to the 1ZZ, but you would have to fabricate three mounts.

As far as the gear ratios, the 6-speed obviously is shorter, so if have a high-revving n/a engine (2ZZGE) then that's the best option. If you have a wide powerband turbo engine (turbo 1ZZ or 2ZZ), then wider gear ratios would be better (5-speed).

And since the '93 to '97 Corolla used the same tranny, the 2ZZGE is a direct swap for the series as well... we think :p

im not feelin that whole 93-02 bein the same tranny deal. the specs for the backend of the 93-97 engines doesnt seem to match the 98-02 and even Toyota themselves have the transmissions split into seperate categories. (where in other vehicles that do have cross generation transmissions show the broad cross generation year coverage)
