    2004 Lancer Ralliart

    Test Drive:
    2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart
    By Jil McIntosh

Last year, Mitsubishi sent me forth in their Lancer O-Z Rally edition. I definitely wasn't impressed. All that provocative name meant was a pricey trim package bolted onto the ordinary Lancer - including the same engine and driveline. My advice was to wait for the upcoming 2004 Lancer Ralliart.

Well, it's here. And if you did listen to me, now's the time to take the hammer to your piggybank. Ralliart's got some steak to go with the sizzle this time.

The Lancer lineup received a facelift for 2004, and while the general shape is still evident, there's a bit more swoop and sexy over the previous box-on-wheels. All Lancers, including Ralliart, are available in a four-door sedan, while Lancer LS and Ralliart can also be ordered as Sportback wagons...

Since that was from a Canadian magazine thoses prices are CDN$'s it should be $18-19k in the states. Which is very close to XRS and runs on regular gas to boot! Might be my next commuter when I wear this one out.

Well, it is a Mitsubishi but...The Ralliart puts up some decent numbers. 1/4 mile in 15 flat...Decent torque also. it's pretty quick.

sounds like a decent car. but you have to remember who makes it. reliabilty isn't going to be there. but i think mitsu has now offered the 10 warrenty. but i am not sure.

If reliability is a concern, then you may have issues with this one, but for the performace, I'd be willing to risk it. :p

The spec-v is the true bang for ure buck. Besides....just with my CAI I play with the Ralliart auto all day. The 5 spd get me and only on the long run.

Actually, the Mitsubishi warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles right now. That's decent but it's only really a cry for help to tall the truth. Help to get units out.

Mitsu's warranty isn't even worth the paper it's printed on. A quick browse over the Evolution forums and you'll find out just how much trouble people are having with Mitsu and warraties. If Mitsu is giving hell to people who own their cream-of-the-crop car, imagine how they treat people that buy lesser models....just pathetic.

This may be true but it will cost more to own as you will have tu feed it premium gas and pay higher insurance premiums cause of the turbo. I use my car for commuting 120 miles a day and that adds up quickly. Also the SRT runs the same engine w/turbo but why is warranty only 7/70,000?

The EVO doesn't have the same warranty. It's 3 yrs/36,000 miles because they are not stupid...They know that if you buy an EVO, you're going to be in it all the time (would you not?!). That's why they didn't put the same warranty on it as well as the other cars.

2004 Evo does have a 7 year warranty now, look it up if you don't believe me.

Besides 3 year warranty or not, a warraty is still a warranty and Mitsu voids them at will no matter the length.

The SRT-4 is obviously not the most practical car, but I am talking performance wise with basic luxuries. You aren't going to find a better deal anywhere.
Evo and STi are 1/3 of the price more. (I don't take the Evo RS into account because it has basically no options other than the spectacular drivetrain and is still 27K, way cool for the tuner that wants to totally rip an Evo apart though). SE-R Spec V is the next good buy, and far more practical because it's a NA. It's performance is great, though I'm not really a fan of the plain exterior styling. What really turns me on with the Four is the Mopar backing. So many parts are already out for it, with more on the way, as well as other tuning companies getting into the game. It think it's a really special car; I have been following it since 2002.

7 Years is a long time for a relatively highly boosted car. 3 year bumper to bumper is fine with me as well. I have been able to get past the fact that it is a Dodge, why can't you all :) j/k hehe. Like what you like, it's all the same to me, and I'm not going to try to argue anymore, just trying to present my case.

ive seen and driven the ralliart lancer - im quite unimpressed for the $19k mitsu dealers around here want for it. For $2k more I can have the srt-4 with 70 more hp and 90 more lb-ft of torque. everyone says you will have more reliability issues with the srt-4, but isnt that just the same old domestic bashing we always get on here? Which of these two cars do you read about more reliabiltiy issues with - the srt-4, or ANY mitsubishi? especially warranty wise. what good is a 10yr warranty if they void it for any reason they see fit?

srt-4 is best bang for the buck period if you wanna spend around $20k. hands down. i think the ralliart and the corolla xrs are both overpriced/underpowered if they want to compete.
