2003 --> 2001 1ZZ engine swap successful!

Well, for all of those who cast major doubt... it's looking like you were mistaken! The 03 1zz engine dropped right in to my 01. There were two sensors that I kept from my 01 engine -- the crank sensor and the oil pressure sensor. Everything else plugged right into my 01 wire harness, thus there will be no ECU change. I also used my intake and exaust manifolds.

I'm enjoying the extra boost, albeit 5hp.

Thanks for all of those that helped.

Congrats on the successful Swap. But isn't that ALOT of work just for 5hp. But Congrats nonetheless

maybe his old 1ZZ was high mileage, and he wanted to get rid of it?
Good job man, and congrats on the newer engine. How hard was the swap?

yeah... my engine had 93k on it and was ticking (see previous post).
The swap was easy (although I was assisted by a mechanic). The only things that needed changing were the manifolds and the sensors. NO modding; plug and play pretty much.

is your car an auto or manual?

good work with the swap, but i'm thinking the extra 5 hp in the 03+ corollas is due to different manifolds/fuel mapping

Yeah, there's probably no extra horsepower at all except from where you lost power due to the knocking. But at least your car is going again, that's what matters. Hopefully mine will be running tomorrow. I'm just letteing the silicone gasket maker set right now and I need to install an oil filter, then pour in the oil and start her up.

Sorry, we got rid of the plastic manifold.

    James-- it's a manual.

    As for the engine's HP:
what does something like that cost?
I find out the fate of my Corolla tonight. If it needs a new engine or not.. I wouldnt even mind just the 03+ corolla engine in there.

Well the installation will run you about $1200 at my shop, plus the parts... which can add up quick :)

    Speedracer41, it's a 1ZZ from an '03 Corolla.

He swapped out an engine for the same engine! There is no difference between an 01 1zz, and an 03 1zz, - It is still a 1zz. Good job on doing your first engine swap though, I know it was intimidating.

Well, at least people know that if they blow their 01, they can get an engine from a 03.

^^^Yeah but a 1zz is a 1zz period. No matter what you put it in. the 5 horse difference comes from differences in the ECU.

I paid a total of $900 for everything. $550 for the engine, delivered from a parts recycler (www.car-part.com), and $350 for the help/most of the work of the mechanic. I hadn't done a swap before but if you and a friend have some tools, some time, and rent a crane to lift the engine, i don't think it would be THAT hard of a project. Good luck!

Yes, the block is the same (1zz), but the top has differences, including the throttle body, manifolds, etc. For this reason, it's 130 hp, not 125. The issue is that several people, notwistanding the 1zz similarity, believed, albeit reasonably, that it wouldn't fit.
