If you spent 9k and don't have more than 96hp, then you my friend (no offense) are an idiot.

wtf...$9k and only 96 horsepower? do you mean you gained 96 hp or summin? cuz if not it just sounds ridiculous cuz our cars are about 95hp stock to the wheels off the dyno

I think he didnt gain hp because he went lower compression for his turbo.

What he's done is laid the ground work to make over 300 hp in his corolla.. all he needs is a turbo now

hes not dumb at alll hes easily set up for over 300 hp well except his tranny that is...

I got over 200 hp on a turbo setup...

    is it a diy??
well I did mine?! I learned how to weld and put the fu^ker together
    was it easy: HELL NO
was it cheap: it would have been but I used good components and decent engine management so not as cheap as it can be...

I could prob piece one together honestly for 1500 or so I would think.. with a decent setup!

Unless you have 7k that you want to throw into an economy car that woun't sell at a profit, then

Nitrous...
Engine management...
End of story...

You just need to figure out why you want a fast car. You probably think its cool. Same here. But is it practical? Are you making 60k a year? No. Do you need a reliable car? Yes. Can you still have a hobby of modifying your car without going broke or screwing it up? Yes.

Just learn as much as you can about what people do to make an engine faster. You'll see what takes a lot of money, what is harmful to the car, what is tacky, and what you can afford and want to do. Once you define all of the areas on which you can modify, you will have a clearer picture of what is practical for you in your own way.

All I will probably do to my corolla is;
tint windows
16" rims
mesh grill
red out tail lights
change light colors on dash
get a good head unit
amp and sub
touchscreen tft /w computer in trunk
nitrous oxide
new muffler
engine management
*maybe a cat-back

All in all it's probably under $1800. which I can afford to spend in smaller chunks throughout the year. It will be fun. I will be happy with my car.

I know I can't afford a turbo, supercharger, or a race engine. Even if I could I would seriously think about it. The only reason I would have a supped up car would be to race it at the track. That would be an expensive hobby, if I could afford it. But I can't. I'm happy with that. I know my car will be tight even without a turbo...

Just keep reading stuff on here, and the internet, learn about everything you can.

You'll figure it out.

Dude...You can swap in a 3sgte for less than 9k and that includes a tranny. So, Yes, I still say he is taking the long route.

I'm opting to go with a 3sgte swap, which will probably be around 8k for everything.

On top of the 9 he has to buy a turbo too...What's that about another 2k. His approach you can throw Cost Effectiveness out in the water.

There are some rough figures that I made up/guess/BS:

    hp/tq gain:
    Cheapo Engine management ($200-300) : +5-10hp
    Home made or aftermarket SRI/CAI ($50-200) : +1-3hp
    Muffler ($50-400) : +1-3hp
    Catback ($?:( +3-5hp

    Free up hp/tq
Ligthen crank pulley ($100-200) : Free up 5-7hp (from Unorthodox site)
Ligther rims (compare to what you have now)
Smaller size rims/tire (compare to what you have now)
Weight reduction : Every 200lbs added in your car, you lose 10hp (from a mustang site)

    Flame suit on :D

Don't forget the stickers and the "extra S and Type R" badging. Worth at least 10HP each.

But seriously - a DIY for 200HP machine (I'm assuming 1ZZ-FE Corolla) that is practical and reliable == doesn't really go together, won't be cost effective.

It would be cheaper to go buy brand new car with 200HP than make a 8th or 9th generation Corolla (not counting the XRS) with that much power and not break down on you.

It also depends on what you mean by practical and reliable - if it is for one run down the track - then you can probably just run a 100HP+ shot of NOS and be done.

Even to get around 160hp you'll have to put in over $1500, so nothings cheap in the corolla world except the owners ;)

give up on the idea of having a fast car then. it's a simple as that.

if there was some miracle trick to make 200 HP out of your car with a simple DIY, dont you think car manufacturers would already be doing that?

"hey Eddy! when you bend the johnson rod coming out of the crankbearing, you get 200hP!"

"shhhh! don't tell the boss, we don't want these cars to make too much power!"

this statement applies to certain demographics, it has nothing to do with what car you drive. go hang out on the Evo boards, these same stupid questions are asked every day..

man I almost have 9k in my engine right now and 3600 for my turbo. I am right now at 96hp 97tq and mine is an 01 with an auto. I lowered my compresion to 8.8:1. I have a 2.5 catback and port and polish my head.

It will take more than 2 to 3 gs to make 200hp

9k? What have you done? At that rate, it will take you about 100grand for you to reach 200.
