1ZZ really that tough or do I have a guardian angel??

So, today, I promised my friend I'd change the engine oil & filter and ATF fluid on her 2001 Corolla, right? While at it, I decided to run some of that Sea Foam stuff through the brake hose while it was idling....well, I'd never used that stuff before and just KNEW I'd done killed it good. Before I shut it off, it started knocking REAL REAL BAD! Like, I thought I had spun a bearing or something. So, I just shut it off to let it sit for a few minutes and to let the HUGE plume of smoke clear out and pray for a few minutes that it would indeed start again and run okay.

Changed tranny fluid to let it soak for a few minutes.

Started it up and it ran fine aside from the white smoke fuming out of the exhaust which was expected.....*WHEW* that was scary.

So, then I did the engine oil thing. Drained the old oil, took the old filter off, replaced with the new filter, then put the drain plug back in. Ready to go, right????

Yes indeed I started it up and watched the oil pressure light as I always do after changing the oil. 3 seconds, it's still on....5.....10.....still on.....give it a tiny bit of throttle......15 seconds.....still on.....WTF!

Turned it off....scratched my head a bit....started it back up.....light still on......*thinking to self "what the hell, right?"* And then the light bulb came on....

Oh...well I'll be shit - might help if I ACTUALLY PUT SOME OIL INTO THE CRANKCASE BECAUSE IT WAS RUNNING COMPLETELY DRY OF OIL. Yeah...you know it - that engine ran without not a drop of oil in the crankcase. My only saving grace MIGHT have been that I filled the new oil filter up with oil before installing it. So, that was about 1/2 a quart, if even that.

So, I shut it off immediately and added the oil. Started it back up and it ran just fine. I took it for a test drive to blow all the soot out of it and it ran great.

    Impressed yet?

    I know I was!

    Late,
    Trav

The engine was stopped and saved on time. Some amount of damage and wear was most likely sustained, but apparently nothing too serious.

hahaha i did a stupid thing on my old corolla. cuz it was leaking oil so i added more oil before driving a 40min drive to pick up sumtin. as i was driving, i notice that there's a brown streak accross my hood and ignored it htinking it was somone that threw out soda at the freeway and kidna hit my car. then when i was near the place, i noticed at a stop light htat my hood was smoking. then i realized it was oil cuz i started smelling it. so i tried to go to a gas station as soon as i can. when i checked the dipstick, there was very little oil. like literally 1/8" to 1/4" of the dipstick had oil. i realized that i didn't put the oilcap back on too thats why teh oil came out. but that was last year and i still drive my old corolla a lot.

bottom line: like what CorollaX siad, "u have a guardian angel... ur angel is called Toyota"

oh i did feel that it lost a few hp after htat cuz it wasn't as fast as before haha. and i failed the smog too so i had to fix that. other than that, still running great

lol. One of my friends has a girlfirend with Camry and she has ran it completely out of oil twice, and then driven it for a while with no oil ofcourse. Then she handed the car down to her little brother once he could drive, and ofcourse he hot rodded it everhywhere, untill he finally totaled it in a wreck i think, but it still ran great lol. I think it had well over 200k miles on it too. Not bad.

Yeah, I just blew a oil line two days ago and ran it for about 15 seconds before the oil light came on. Tapped the line off and filled it back up with the oil I just changed out of it  and was good to go. Of course there is oil everywhere in my engine bay, but there is no ill effects of any sort on my motor :D

sea foam is suppose to do that. You want to add it with the the older oil though. You want to put 1/3 in your brake boost presure line (if the corolla has one),1/3 in your oil and 1/3 in your gas tank. Rev the engine while sucking it in then turn it off for 30min. Drain the old oil,put new oil and filter in and your done

BTW it will smoke when you suck it in the brake booster. I am not sure its called the pressure line but its the only hose that sucks in air connected to the brake booster

It's called a vacuum line... All the smoke and sputtering is fine, as long as you remember to put new oil back in before restarting the engine.

my mom has seized a fully loaded 86 camry, run a 93 paseo dry (at one point, enough to make the oil *pressure* light come on) twice before the engine was completely shot, and has come very, very close in her 98 corolla as far as oil's concerned

In fact, I'm willing to bet if I went down to the garage now and checked her oil it would be low....
    hah!

Dude!! You need to help her out! Let her know theres this little thing the car needs besides gas, called OIL!!

Even if she never changed it and just added oil when it started to get low, it would be better then running it completely out!!

No offense, but your mom must be a dits!
