    1ZZ-FE to VVT-i engine swap

My sister just left for college and now her 99 VE corolla is mine. It seems to be a quick car and of course I am looking for ways to make it faster. I noticed that the VVT-i seems to make a little bit more hp but more torque lower in the RPM range. Would it be cheaper and better to swap the engine to the VVT-i? I am also looking at turbocharging it. I have just read up on some of the turbo forums that the SF kit is not the way to go. I am reletivly inexperienced with newer cars (i.e. fuel injection, ECUs, front-wheel drive). I have been spending the last 3 years working on earlier cars. Is there a company that makes a good supercharger or turbo kit that works well? Also, on another subject, would it be eaiser to switch the gauge cluster out for one with a tach in it or get a dashtop mounted kit. I havn't the slightest clue who's idea it was to offer a 5-speed car without a tach but I would really like to correct this problem. Thanks for all of your help.

Mine is a 99, a year before they introduced the 1ZZ-FE with variable valve timing. Thanks.

IMO, if you are planning on doing a motor swap, why don't you swap a 2ZZ-GE engine in it? Swapping a 1ZZ-FE non vvt-i to 1ZZ-FE w/vvt-i is kind of a waste of money.

you can squeeze more power out of a non-vvti 1zz-fe than you could on a vvti 1zz-fe, just search around or ask vortex

Ah yeah, i forgot about the 2 year delay of it being a VVTI part. There is only a 5 horsepower difference in the non-vvti and vvti. If you swap engines your looking at 3000+ dollars. And doing a non-vvti to vvti for 5hp is a big waste, expecially the price to do it.

Thanks. I was thinking along the same lines but just thought id ask everyone. What is the 2ZZ-FE? I would assume second generation of the ZZ family. How big is it? How easy would it be to swap?

Its the celica gt-s engine with 180 hp / 120ish torque its 1.8 liters like the 1zz but it has vvtl-i with lift so it can rev high and get more horsepower above 6000 rpms. The cost would be 5000grand + to swap it in.

    cuz he's from michigan :p

    just playing.

he should be able to do it himself, and it shouldn't cost nearly taht much if he can find the engine for cheap.

is this a daily driver though? if so, i wouldn't bother getting a 2zz in there, imo it's not a good engine for a city-driven car, because of the need to rev high in order to get the thing moving.

I know swaps to do a 4AGZE or a 4AGE-20v are like 3000+ dollars to swap, this does include labor or at least part of it, hehe.

    Depends on which celica engine
    1ZZ-FE, 2ZZ-GE, 3S-GE, 3S-GTE, 5S-FE, 7A-FE, anymore?

Would it matter much if you swapped an auto celica engine to auto corolla ? And as for daily driving ... (not in the city)?

this is really easy to do:
u could buy any of the tach clusters from ebay or whatever. then u need to find the ignition coil from the ECM ( has to be done by the computer!!) u may want to take it to a electrisist for that. then that cord u conected to the OEM harness and then plug the new tach cluster. no other modifications has to be done.
u can even get the corolla s cluster :D

or you buy the cluster from ebay, swap the speedo heads to keep your mileage, replug shit in and you're done. if you want one of those super awesome pillar tachs, there is a black with white stripe (or white withe black stripe) wire that is the signal wire, wire every thing else (power groun accessory) and you should be good to go.

hey man the 2zz engine doesnt have a supercharger out for it yet but the 1zz does. if you would go that route but the 2zz engine is the gts engine fixed up a bunch and your lookin at about 5 g's to swap it and another 2 for the supercharger when they come out with it. if i was you i would stick with the 1zz and throw a supercharger on it. i think you would be happy with that
