    1zz-fe Is Interference...

I had always wondered as to whether or not the 1ZZ-FE is interference or non-interference. Since our engines are chained, there's usually never going to be a situation to actually "test it out". Not to mention, if your chain breaks, you have bigger problems.

At any rate, there was a thread on Toyota Nation and some dude who was working on a 99 Corolla verified that with a valve fully open, the piston DID indeed contact the valve at about 10º BTDC.

    Meaning....our engines ARE INTERFERENCE.

What are the chances of a chain breaking, assuming the engine is maintained well? What is the main culprit of a broken chain...high revs or lack of lubrication or age? I have 53000miles on my 03 and I redline it several times daily....high revving is no stranger to my engine. It gets maintained VERY well, though. Should I be worried about breaking the chain anytime soon? Just not sure how much these things can withstand is all.

damn until now I thought all Toyota engines are non-interference
anybody got pics of pistons from a 1ZZ? I know the pistons from the A series are grooved for the valves.

About timing chains there are usually tell tale signs of when your chan is going to give out. With older engines that used chains, the chain usually loosen up causing a 'clanking' noise long before they ever give out.

Ummmmmm. Doesn't the 1zz-fe have a timing belt? Last time I checked my 2001 Corolla had a belt not a chain.

check again, your 01 has a chain. this is the chain underneath the valve cover that is responsible for the timing of your valves.

i think you will have to worry about the chain guides going bad b4 the chain... they have a plastic like coating that will wear away after a while... how long that is depends on how hard you run your enigne.

So our engines have chains? ARG! The dealership told me I needed to change my timing belt at 60k. Could someone please point me to a 1zz-fe spec that would show me there is no timing belt?
