'01 Corolla Rear Disc Brake Conversion

Well everyone, I'm happy to annouce that I'm re-releasing the Phoenix Tuning Rear Disc Brake Conversion. I've had a car here that I've been able to do some more R&D on and I've made some improvements to make the conversion easier. I'll be making an official thread in the near future and updating my website. In the meantime, if you want a rear disc conversion for your '93 to '02 Corolla, just let me know.

Now with that said, let me introduce you to Jerry's Corolla!

Vamp the rotors are 35 for both and 20 for the pads for the ones over here, aftermarket starts at 220 and higher depending from regular high strenght steel to ceramic rear disc. pads included some applications require stanless steel brake lines. this is from a AE101 Levin 93-97 YRS. though right now i don't got that much time to send parts back to the US until after December due to the Holidays. but i got the price for ya.

These won't fit the AE101 rear brakes, they are a different setup. They are modified Celica GT parts. We're going to be looking at around $550 for the kit but I haven't finalized that yet. I'm pretty sure that these will work with ABS no problem but let me know ahead of time that they will be for a car with ABS just so that I can be sure.

is it a good idea to add a bias control if switching to discs? or would it still be biased correctly at stock settings.

I tested it out extensively on a rainy day here in Savannah, out in a large empty parking lot and I didn't have a problem. So as far as I can tell it's 100% good to go in stock form :)

You guys are talking about the proportioning valve right? I been running with my OEM drum prop valve for a year now and autoXed with in with no problems. However I swapped out to a AE92GTS valve from junkyard this summer and suprise, suprise, it was seized! Didn't find out till i finish bleeding 2 out of 4 sides. Lession learned, get a new bpv if you have the urge to switch em. Worst waste of 3 hrs in my life! And the thing is a pain to get to on our years.

DOC, what method did you use to redrill the rotors? I'm planning on doing a bbk from fastbrake and I found out they used 4X114 prelude rotors for their 11" kits. I will have to redrill those

I used a Corolla brake drum clamped over the brake disc with them both centered by a hub that I had removed. Then I used the Corolla brake drum as a guide.

Probably looking at $550 for the parts, and I'd say $250 or so should cover the labor.

hey tweak, since you're redrilling 5x100 rotors to fit 4x100 couldn't you just use mr2 spyder rotors? I believe they are 4x100 already.

Hey doc just thought of something...I would assume MR2 discs are larger...so why not a big brake kit based off the MR2? Only issue I would have with that is 14" rim clearance.

Okay um, $350 for labor! LOL

I will look into using the MR2 parts if I get a chance, the big problem I see is availability of used parts... they're pretty rare. If the rotors fit that would be pretty sweet though.

Really sweet! But Im assuming the rotors are bigger than the corolla rotors. If they are bigger and it turns out a 14" wheel can clear the rotors, then Id buy a "big brake" kit as long as price is reasonable.

I was looking around and it seems like the rotors on the MR2 are: F254mm / R261mm or something around there.

The corolla front discs also appear to be 254mm from what I can find. also, as for sourcing mr2 discs people would be more than able to buy new aftermarket ones if that becomes a limiting factor.

personally if I did the swap I'm not even interested in slotted/drilled rotors, rather have the pads last longer and the discs will easily compensate for the drums even without holes or slots.

So clearance wont be an issue here. Also that is true, there are more options for MR2 brakes. Many more rotors available. It would make it easier for people to do regular maintenance.

AE101/111 Corollas/Levins/Truenos have a 255mm front discs and 266mm rear disc (except superstrut setup which have dual piston calipers and 275(?)mm front discs. After I did my rear disc conversion I was able to fit steelies on just fine w/o clearance issues.

Yes, the AE111 rear brakes will fit onto the ZZE110, but good luck getting pads and rotors for them.

If anyone wants a kit I will go ahead and build one for you. It's $549 including shipping for a kit with no pads and $599 shipped for a kit with premium pads. The kit comes with resufaced Toyota rotors, but if you like you can upgrade to cross-drilled/slotted rotors for $169 more.
